Is there any way to complete the game without ever using a boat?

The boats are so slow and the mechanics are janky. I dont ever want to use them (I have made an oath) but I am slowly running out of directions to go before I hit bodies of water that are too wide to swim across. Will I eventually find a land passage or does the world generate exclusively in islands???

You barely move on speed 1 same with reversing..... No one is going to enjoy taking hours to find the next biome when you can be attacked by the serpent at anytime in the deep sea. Hug the shore where it is more shallow to avoid the serpent you say? Run into the plains biome and aggro a deathsquito while being un equip and its game over. The wind mechanic makes you go in directions that you dont want to go in just to keep moving at a reasonable pace this is the issue.

The wind does not always need to be blowing exactly from behind in order for you to move forward. It can also blow at an angle with respect to your desired direction. Look up online how sailing works in real life and the relationship between the wind and your desired trajectory.

You really are complaining about a non-existing issue (sorry to say that).

Removing the wind mechanic in-game would be absolutely horrible and would dumb the game down way too much in my opinion.

And besides, you're a Viking for Odin's sake! You know what Vikings were supposedly good at, right?

If you don't want to use a boat play another game, boats are essential to Valheim and core to the experience.

There are other games in teh same genre w2ith no boats from Conan Exiles to The Forest.

Like others have said, you're gonna have to use a boat. People go out of their way to try for very long times to generate seeds where you can finish all the bosses on the same starting island, so most people just find the seeds people post of it. If you just generated your own seed, you are absolutely going to have to suck it up and use a boat, or start a new server.

omg haha when i first started playing this game the boat gave me extreme anxiety knowing if i get attacked on this this its over, i would even plan my boating trips to only bringing a small ration of food, bow and arrows and portal, no gear or until i made a back up troll armor set never bringing my top gear in case of death, once i was sailing to close to land and a troll came at me it was the most anxiety iv ever had in a game haha, then once at night a serpent came at me i sailed to the closest land in the direction the wind took me, made it with once hit left to the boat jumped out and killed it with arrows getting a trophy and a sense of calm came over me.

now i just sail at night full top gear, draugr bow needle arrows and kill the serpent with 6-8 shots no more anxiety or F#(k$ given, only issue i have now with boat is forgetting to bring a portal when going to new lands.

only tip i can give is if you get attacked by serpent is always bring the best arrows you can make, keep the boat moving by letting is sail by itself disengage the paddle start shooting before it attacks you try to get some hits in once you hear it roar, and bring it down quick, then go back for the meat. if you sailing against the wind turn the boat with the wind set the sail at max speed disengage and let it self sail while you rain it with arrows. GL i'v killed 2 serpents chasing me one night with this method not a single hit did they land. after this i knew night sailing is now fun.

Google "Valheim map generator" and keep generating until you stumble on a map that has all bosses within range (Yagluth doesn't matter as beating him has no benefits as of now).

They don't all need to be on the main island, could also be on an island a bridge distance away.

...you could use a hoe and tons of stone to "raise" the level of the ground starting at and extending from one shoreline - enough to make long but shallow land-bridges. It's easy enough to get stone, and easy enough to raise land in a straight line, and it could be a fun project, AND make for a unique world, AND help you keep your oath. :)

just use the oars on boats; it's a freaking motorboat; you don't care about the wind.
then you need to learn how to steer the thing: you must return to a centered rudder
after you're going in the direction you want. once you master oars and steering and
the wind is right try sails.

Not that i'm trying to make you break your oath, but have you made it to the fastest boats in the game? because in my opinion they feel slow until the best one. it can also make a difference if you know how to sail with the wind or not, there are pretty good guides on it. since ore is so heavy, it is the best way i have found to move around ore at a quick speed, because the game is a series of islands EVERYWHERE and wandering into a higher level bio-me too early to explore can get you killed so sailing to a new spot and landing in a safe bio-me can be a better option in my opinion.

If you REALLY want to just be on your island, you could teleport ore in from another world, but if want to kill all the bosses and clear the game you will need to sail to their spawn locations because they are all over the place, at least they were for me. hope that helps!

Once you actually learn how to control the boat it can be very rewarding. One of my favorite parts of the game. My first couple attempts I felt the same way as you do now.

And yes I think i remember seeing seeds with landmasses that stretched to all the biomes and included all bosses... some places required a short swim. But these maps are fairly rare AFAK

Outside of using the debug mode to fly, not really. A few map seeds will have all you need on one land mass, but the odds of you having that are just shy of slim and none.

The sailing in here is actually fairly realistic for a video game, especially compared to other games with sailing. It's a system that has a learning curve to it, but once you do it's easy to manage. If all you've built so far is a raft, I can understand your feeling. Rafts suck the chrome of a bumper. They're fine for crossing rivers or short coast hops, but you need to get yourself the next tier up and it'll be like night and day.

Plus you don't want to miss the fun of cutting sharp turns in the water on a stormy night, trying to ride the waves to avoid being swamped while a serpent follows behind waiting for you to fall overboard! :D
