Chickens and Egg Laying
Couldnt find a proper thread but basically my chicken simply dont lay eggs and i cannot figure out why.
Theres actually a ultimate chicken guide on youtube concerning the new chicken feature in the game but doing exactly what the dude says leaves me with nothing.
Most of the time at the beginning some chicken lay eggs and then simply stop laying eggs.
they eat all the barley i offer them but no eggs.
it goes to 100 barley = zero eggs.
what is the problem? i simply cannot figure it out.
someone has similar experience?
to my setup:
the chicken are sheltered and i have 5 boxes 4x4 each with each 4 chickens inside.

i feed them onion seeds and they seem to produce eggs until a max. count of chickens/hens/eggs in an area. i built my enclosure a bit stretched and bent for that reason and i like to think it helps (lol), anyway so far i am happy with the amount of eggs i get. But yeah, as soon as it starts to get busy in there no more eggs will spawn, but the onion seeds still get eaten. at this point i guess it's time to get some chicken meat :')
I also distrust any "simple farming methods", "best way to farm" and especially "ultimate guides to" after only a few days of accessability. Science it out! ;D

Perhaps you should DM the creator of the video if you are having problems with his method? Would probably be faster than a bunch of randos watching the video, then trying to replicate it, then trying to figure out why you can't seem to replicate it.
Not trying to be a d**k, just that may be a more efficient way to solve your problem.

Thanks for all the replies but there is still no real "solution" to my problem.
The way it's described in the youtube video from FireSpark81
called "The Ultimate Guide To Chickens In Valheim Mistlands Update"
is simply not working for me in any way. The only way they lay eggs at all now is to have a large enclosure with only some chickens. and then they also only lay 2-3 eggs at a time
(enclosure ~ 12x12 with 10 chicken)
I recommend everyone answering in this Threead to watch his youtube video so you guys understand what the problem is.

I just let my chickens wander around my garden. I only feed them turnip seeds though. They aren't exactly laying eggs on an industrial scale but i get at least one every time i visit the place.

I might be wrong but it seems the same as any other tamed animal. If too many are in the enclosure they stop breeding

I had this issue as well. I built a 2x2 half wall enclosure far from the "hatchery", no fire (cold eggs). Next, I pushed 4 chickens into the new enclosure and they have been spitting out eggs ever since. My hatchery still doesn't produce eggs though.

Are they actually eating the barley? Mine are eating the turnip seeds I give them and laying eggs indoors near a fire.

Do they mate? See the floating hearts? If not, feed the chickens and push them closer together. If you keep them in an enclosure that is too big, they will walk away from each other after eating.

in addition, you need a campfire or other heat source near them so that the eggs will hatch.
