Automate resource gathering
The game gets to a point where I copy stone/iron/food from another save to give myself unlimited resources. I would rather not do that, but I find it gets tedious doing it manually with the current weight and storage limitations.
I LOVE satisfactory and in that game you work your way up to where you can automate resource gathering. I would like this game to implement that.
I'm thinking we craft miners that require a lot of resources making us manually farm them for a while until we have the resources to build the miner. We have to setup defenses to keep them safe. They will produce a set amount per hour/day so the more we have up the more we get per hour/day. This way we are encouraged to still go out and explore and build as many miners as we can.
You still need to travel around to collect all the resources. So getting a big ship and friends with their ships will make things faster and easier.
Some resources may require workers, and we can charm/train/tame certain NPCs to work for us to help gather. That could be another alternative instead of miners, but I think a miner would be easier to program. A machine that just spits out ore every so often.
In Satisfactory you can build containers that link to the miners. I think for this game it would just have a built-in container to limit items being loaded in the world via it dropping them all over the place.
What are your thoughts?

It is at heart a survival game not a building game. Perhaps a building mode would be something you would like. I personally love the grind and i get a lot of satisfaction from doing it the hard way. When i stand back and look what i have built i feel every little part of it.

I agree. Would spoil balance and purpose of survival.
No.
State of Decay 2 is a survival game and you get resources daily via outposts. Just so as you're near the end of the game the grind is lessened and a bit more automated. But you still need to go get resources, just not as forced.
How about a DUPLICATOR? Acts like a SMELTER, but duplicates ore (nothing else) and costs the same wood/fuel as a Smelter. Yeah it's faster to go out and mine iron, but you could also plus your total income of iron by also duplicating some while you're out.

Maybe much later in the game we could eventually build our own village and hire other (random NPCs) vikings to do our bidding for gold coins. Possibly add in a "Friendship" system with NPCs that make them eventually give us gifts of materials, food, weaponry/armor, unique items, etc.
Would have the dual effect of:
1. Making gathering a bit less tedious for those that were burnt out.
2. Make use of excess gold coin until the trader is updated.
Personally, I don't mind gathering at all; I just hate when a particularly-important resource early-on (like Tin, for example) is in very, very short supply, which causes me to venture out in to the Ocean much sooner than I want to for some extra.
However, knowing what I do now about that game, that doesn't bother me so much since I can counter anything currently in the game fairly well. But crossing a narrow Ocean path on a raft because you need some extra Tin and encountering a Serpent sure is exciting. ;)

the Valheim Plus mod on Nexus has tons of different ways to automate & facilitate gathering, crafting and moving stuff around.

Disagree. Valheim is one of the few games that have a good balance in resource gathering rates and expenditure and has pretty obvious ways to optimize it. Just because some few players can find it "tedious" doesn't make it a game problem.
I had a blast playing with two friends, where one focused on hunting and food, another on wood and building (me), and third on mining and equipment. Apart from that, I simply see it as part of the game to harvest things that I need even when solo, and its hard to imagine for me what I would spent the time on if I could automate that like you're suggesting.

Its legs of would be mmo popping out i guess where everything is more suited for bulk production by pack of teammates rather than one handyman. I'd indeed love to tame charm or force into labour few npcs. First candidates being stacks of ancient seeds lying everywhere allready after bit of copper mining. What are your thoughts?

To your initial issue. When restarting the game I only harvest some things until I have 5 stacks of them (ex: wood, stone). Then I simply use a "cheat" that lets me build without having those particular resources. Certain items I only collect the hard way (fuling totems, dragon eggs, and the like).
Just have to be able to trust yourself not to cheat within your own game rules. :)

Automation in a game about vikings where the best technology is a lightning rod to make offerings to Thor....
would it not be easier to just hire a troll to do your mining? :)

That is why I suggested taming or training NPCs to do it for us. The game has magic and so I think having a magical miner isn't too far outside the realm of lore. I mean the game has a walking tree.

I think a poll to see where the majority of players are on the subject. My friends and I stopped playing because we only get 3 hours a week to play (game night), and we didn't want to spend each week just farming iron.
I don't know if Valheim has the same player base from a year ago or if it has dropped. If it has dropped, would adding that feature bring them back?
If the game had an automated system you had to work to unlock, then it's not taking away from you doing it your way if you choose not to use them.
The goal is to make the game that people will play and enjoy while staying true to the dev's idea of the game. I wonder if any automation fits into that.

I personally farm off the main server nowadays, and then world hop back to the main server with a 100% full inventory and completely over encumbered. Cuts out the travel time and keeps me from completely destroying the environment of the main server. Stone is super easy to farm from the pillars in the plains, wood I just elder buff with stamina food and chop everything down in sight for 5 minutes. Iron is also easy, just find a seed on the map viewer that has a high crypt density swamp that is relatively close to the spawn point. It's a good way to do things if you don't want to just spawn in materials with the console.

I would say no to the automated thing. Really it is about getting what you need and moving on to the upgraded stuff. There are core units like the forge etc but really we may end up in a situation where we have to go to the far north and bring everything with us. Someone even found a large "trader" ship in the code or something like that.
For building you can use cheats or world hop to gather resources and you can even use the console to have it all.
In time I believe they will add a building mode where resources are not needed to build but while it is in early access I am sure they want people to play the game for the data / feedback on balance etc.
We are vikings who invade and dominate the world around us.... not managers
Well that is how I feel about it.
