Stranded on an Island

Exploring the world with a boat the other day quickly turned into a nightmare! First of all, I discovered an island (purely Black Forest) and built a small hut there. Mistakenly I set my spawn point there. It was when I decided to sail off to another island that I got screwed. I found a Swamp island and died. The problem then was that I was stuck on the island mentioned earlier and as far as I checked there was literally NO WAY to get off!

Like I said it was 100% Black Forest Biome which means NO FLINT, and NO BOARS. This literally meant that I COULD NOT UPGRADE MY WORKBENCH PAST LEVEL 1, couldn't make armor, a bow, and COULD NOT MAKE A RAFT. This aspect of the game is seriously broken! I get it if the Black Forest is a harder biome, but the devs should make at least a few boars and some flint spawn there. I freakin love this game!, but it would be great if the devs could make it possible to get out of this situation without having to cheat and go to another world.

I always have multiple boats. I never go on a voyage without having extra armour and tools back at base just in case i die or get stranded and need to do a dash back to my body. Build a portal and name it in your base before you leave too.

Then when you get to the new island, never sleep on the new island until you have a portal down. That way you can spawn back at home with the spare supplies.

These simple things are how one avoids "needing" to cheat.

Unfortunately i have to wholeheartedly and completely disagree with your take

You my friend were just woefully unprepared for your voyage and now you've copped it on the chin and hopefully learned your lesson:riddler:

Safe future travels friend.

and remember that Odin is always watching.

Nothing broken, all working as intended. Learn the game before complaining about things that are easily prevented and solved already.

Start a new world, gather resources, log back to old world --> Done.
You keep resources gathered in other worlds

the LAST thing you do is set your spawn point. Checklist..

-main home that is safe to spawn in naked. it has rest bonus 10 or more, spare gear and food, and is defended from enemy well enough; its probably in the meadows or on an island that nothing can get to etc. It probably has a moat or is lofted up high.
-chest with spare gear & food at new site
-portal to safe area (main home/hub, usually)
-materials for a boat if near water?
ok, now you can make a bed and spawn here. Worst case, you have several options to get to your main home or recover.

we have all done it. Oops and move on

Valheim teaches us many lessons, but we learn many of them the hard way.

Quite often I've found that it is a failure to prepare properly that leads to a sticky situation or avoidable death.

Bring portal materials, or materials for a raft/karve/longboat with you when you travel to new places by boat. Be wary about setting that new spawn point, you'll either have to recover at another base and travel back if you die, or could end up in the situation you were in. As long as you're prepared for those situations you'll be able to recover easily.

Did you sail around the entire island before setting foot on it? If you had then maybe you would have known it was probably all Black Forest, and lacked the materials you mentioned.

There are so many things in this game that can be difficult to deal with, but most of the time it's due to our decisions. This game tends not to hold our hands, it lets us make mistakes and it's part of the reason I like it so much. You made mistakes, and learned.

GunsForBucks solution will work. So will world hopping.

Good luck, and I hope you're better prepared next time.

I keep a portal and a spare boat on a different private server after this type of thing happened to me. It is kind of cheaty, but, it works very well. And you can also put a spare set of armour in the other server for emergencies. I keep my original troll armour upgrading it as I get more troll hides as well. They work very well for a corpse run. And a small stock of food on the other server. I have a very simple house built on the other server, and I consider it to be my backup save spot. Then I don't have to lose my skill points to respawn after destroying the bed.

I don’t know...the game is pretty simple if you just think ahead. If the game is so easy that you never get dealt a lesson, what reason is there to play?

As Guns said, it is still possible to get off the island.

Every one who's spent significant time travelling by boat hits this issue. You can minimize the risk by constantly carrying the portal mats and throwin' one of those down at your 'exploration' hut. It's a little gamey, but if you have a dedicated 'temp'/unnamed portal whose only purpose is to be your 'exploration point', then theoretically you always have a way back to your main base.

Once you realize the portal's location might actually be useful, use a different base portal and set it to the new location's name. Travel back thru the 'temp'/unnamed portal, and rename it to the new location name and put that name on your map. Later, you can dial any of the three/four travel portals to that name/location and go back there...

Kinda like making sure you eat well before battle, this game encourages you to set-up before you do anything major...
