OMG! TREASURE SHIP RUINS!!!! I forgot that they often give you FIRE ARROWS in the chests!!!! I just dug on up looking for feathers and low-and-behold...FIRE ARROWS! 20 of them! Luckily, I marked them on my map as I came to them...AND...I need the stone for my building project. Win-win all around. (slaps forehead) Why didn't I think of this before?

Empyrion has a thread dedicated to facepalm moments. Some of them are hilarious but more often they provide some practical insight/tips/wtf/etc./etc. It also provides a less embarrassing way for others to see they aren't the only ones being their own worst enemy.

I can confirm that tree cutting is a low feather count endeavor. Hanging on the coast in an open field during a rainstorm is my formula for feather joy and bow practice - even though I can't craft with them yet.

similar here, my starting base (and my hub I guess) in meadows is a place when You get out from ur bed, walk from that room and I don't think I've ever seen less than 2 birds on the roofs of my encampment....plus couple more on the grassfield right ouside the gate

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried them all, except for the harpoon. Nice idea. I spent over 6 hours yesterday hunting for feathers. I scoured the village ruins in the meadows (found a few), searched for dungeons in the black forest, got maybe 20 after doing 3 dungeons, shot every bird I saw, which wasn't many. I came home with only about 30 feathers for all that effort. That is just way too much of a grind for such an important item. Why can't we buy feathers from the trader? That would be a stellar idea. Right now I would give all the gold I have for a stack of feathers.

At the beginning of the game, I got feathers all the time when cutting trees...no nearby birds. I'm in the middle of a building project right now and have cut down hundreds of trees, with barely a drop of feathers. We had so many feathers we were tossing them when our inventories were full (my husband plays with me, btw). I'm kicking myself now that I can't find them.

Strange, I'm overrun with feathers. Going outside on any morning, there are birds sitting on the ground which can be easily killed with a bow. They also tend to alight near you in the late afternoon.

Birds tend to stick around on the ground when it's raining, especially on the coastlines. Just go out there with a bunch of wooden arrows and farm them.

The ones that come as tree drops are only single feathers as well. At least the bird kill drops are 3. The black forest crypts can sometimes give 10 or more in a single chest... not that often, would be nice if they gave more often.

That said I usually have a chest full of feather by the time I start making frost arrows. But I avoid using them early on... only for boss fights and not that many. Rather save them for better arrows. If they dropped more often I would probably start making fire/flint arrows right away ha ha.

Meadows or open area, by water during the rain is the best I can get like 20+ a day and wooden arrows are good enough

There is a chance trees drop feathers, not every time. Just kill some birds with ordinary wooden arrows, should give you a few stacks in no time. If you can't find them, go to another place.

Greys never dropped them for me... didn't get the game at release so I don't know what may have changed.
Trees are pretty rare drop but they still do.
My favorite is to do crypts in the Black Forest.. nice getting a half stack from one.
A lot of people wait for rain days and shoot birds then... birds will stay grounded when it rains. Also seem to sit around at night too... but the crypts typically work best for me since i am collecting cores anyway so I am not going out of my way to find them.

I'd like to see more in the crypts personally.

If you manage to get a harpoon before Modor (not too difficult) then that is a great way to kill birds.

That's interesting, what's the harpoon advantage? Just quicker to fire, or does it have a wider hitbox?

You can also find feathers in loot crates throughout the world.

The advantage is infinite ammo. You can keep throwing it over and over at birds without wasting the arrows you are trying to make/save for the boss fight. It also handles better than a spear for throwing (it returns to your hand right away without having to be picked up).

To add to this conversation, I have over 400 hours in valheim and I've never seen a tree drop a feather. I've always just hunted birds to get them. There are sometimes some in chests, but not many.

I've had falling trees take out seagulls in flight, which is extra hilarious combined with a resource doubler mod. If you don't see the bird that would look like 'tree drops feathers'.
