When creating a new map/world you can enter an alphanumeric string/text. This string sets all the parameters for how your map/world will look like. Thats called a seed. You can find various seeds here on the forums or search for other websites puiblishing seeeds, or, more fun, just try some ramdon seeds and checkout how the world looks like.

When you start a map it is random seed. Seeds are pretty much a specific map layout when you start a map you can type in a seed and get that map layout corresponding to that seed

I got a question though: if i use it for a new playthrough will it generate recently added stuff like frost caves?

Yes all new maps do. Only the ones where you had, prior to that update, generated didn't if you had been near any mountain ranges.
