Stars and scaling are tied to the number of bosses defeated in the world. It has nothing to do with distance from spawn. The only thing affected by distance from spawn is what biomes can spawn in world generation.

You often find 2 star wolves when the Werewolf spawns. So go at night.. Oh and good luck.

I tried to find a 2 star wolf on my local mountain near the starting area, it is one of the higher mountains, no joy, read somewhere the further out you go the more chance, so almost at the edge of the world, to the north in my case, half way up a tall mountain I got lucky. Tamed and shipped back a pack of them, that was an adventure on the high seas with serpents in it's self, one of the wolves became serpent food sadly.

Since then I have spent a lot of time mining the silver from my local high mountain, lots of in game nights, and still had not encountered a 2 star wolf, in packs, plenty of 1 star wolves have appeared though. Just recently encountered my 2nd 2 star in the wild, way off to the north west on a mountain with the Moder altar, they seem very rare to me and I am around day 700 in game.

with wolves you will find higher starred animals at night time. so do your wolf hunting at night.

Wolves onlready have a "night-only" limitation for having starred spawns so I am wondering whether it would be possible for me to tame a 2 star wolf on the starting island if it has a mountain large enough to spawn wolves.

Both the 1 & 2 star wolves I captured & tamed (with some luck & preparation) were both found on my starting island. Both spawned at night. Also from my findings the 2 star wolves are usually on bigger mountains, so look for a 2 star there. But I did manage to only find 1 star wolves on a smaller mountain, cannot confirm if 2 star wolves spawn on smaller mountains, my guess is probably not.

Larger mountains I found tend to night spawn both 1 & 2 stars wolves about the same amount that I found and was able to capture & tame.

Also I came across a 2 star lumberjack troll the other day, (not the rock yeeting variant) as it attacked me while I was riding my lox from the south of the starting island.

Should be able to if RNGesus is kind. I'm near center of the world and I've ran across several 1 and 2 star boars that I've started taming, same with deer and necks.

I have spawned into a new game and had a one start troll standing 30 feet from me just because YOU have not seen one does not mean it can not happen.

I've not left the starter island and have several tamed **boars and see starred Necks, deer and dwarf types pretty regularly. No starred trolls.
Maybe your info is obsolete or maybe we need to put an actual distance on how far away they spawn instead of just saying "far" and "close".
