What is the point of Swords?
I came back to the game after a while and maces are just better at everything now... except fighting trolls maybe. And there are better weapons for that too

There's little point in any other weapon type I find. Clubs and maces are good against everything except trolls, so shoot trolls with piercing arrows instead. They do a decent job at crowd control with their wide swing arc and stagger. Maces are fantastic in swamps. They then transition nicely into Frostner and Porcupine towards end-game. And you get to use shields with them.
Maybe when the next update hits there will be more biomes and enemies with different weaknesses to make other weapons more relevant. Until then, it's maces and bows for me!

Toughest enemy in the mountain is the golem, which the sword deals grey damage against. Mace wins again. Mace is one-handed. I seem to recall that the sword is better when you get into the mountain biome,

Sword used to have the highest range together with being most stamina efficient, with good speed and damage. So basically the best dedicated weapon that is not specialized and not a tool.
Numbers have changed a bit with H&H
I hope these stats are correct https://valheim.fandom.com/wiki/Weapons
Just compare them, you will see that the sword still has an edge over other weapons.
Higher range and speed than axes.
Lower stamina usage and higher secondary attack multiplier than clubs.
Clubs do have more stagger and knockback though, but then again the knockback often prevents you from being able to chain more attacks. So I guess clubs are more defensive in that regard.
Comparing only the one-handed versions here, obviously.

Mace is good for damage, but kills in stamina drain. Unless that's been updated as well.Toughest enemy in the mountain is the golem, which the sword deals grey damage against. Mace wins again. Mace is one-handed. I seem to recall that the sword is better when you get into the mountain biome,
Sword is faster with good damage vs most mobs. Been personally using the dark iron sword at lvl 3 and it works great. Especially with the guys system rework.
Of course though I still use other weapons depending on the situation.

What's a Dark Iron Sword?
Are you talking about a blackmetal sword? That's a final weapon that is so good it kills everything because it is so good.
But how is using an Iron Sword against Golems working out?

i agree
the sword is great against most enemys as a generell purpose weapon
it depends on what type of enemy you encounter

Hm seems swords do still have potential even though ingame swinging maces costs me even less stamina than swinging a mace of the same material. I guess that comes from weapon skill now?

IMO, swords shine more as you progress closer to the current end-game. If I'm in the Plains, I'd pick the blackmetal sword over the Porcupine anytime.
On a neutral target like fulings, I tend to do higher damage with my blackmetal sword than the Porcupine, even though my swords skill is like 5 levels lower.
The swords' low knockback also makes it easier to land the full 3 hit combo. I actually find the clubs' high knockback annoying, to be honest.

Also different damage types. Skellies for example don't like blunt (as far as I know). My Crystal Axe for example feels way more effective against fulings than Frostner (slash vs Blunt/elemental). I feel like they try to make mobs resistant vs weak versus certain DMG types. A different tool for every job.

I never tried the mace, but i imagine a mace is a two hand weapon vs the sword that require only one hand wich allow you to carry a shield to block the enemys attack.
The block with a shield often result in the enemy stopping their attack for a short period of time wich allow you to counter attack. Its quite nice.
I dare to say the sword and shield is a really nice combination.
I guess it depend on your playstyle
The strength of the maze is that it have a better armour penetration than the sword and hit a bit harder.. BUT its downsize i imagine ( guess ) is that you cant carry a shields protection and features.

wtf are you talking about, mace 2 handed?
I think maces are go-to melee weapons until you get porcupine. Noticable enemies resistant to blunt (Troll, Lox, Wraith) should be taken out with bow anyway.
