More stars the more:

1. Health
2. Damage
3. Defense
4. Resources dropped on death.

For example, A very large pack of 2 star wolves can kill certain biome bosses in seconds.

Yes but also if you have a 2 star and a 1 star, there's a 50/50 chance a 2 star will be produced etc. This is how people save time by getting one 2 star and breeding it with a lesser until they get a second 2 star so that they can then kill off the lesser star'd and then have a 2 star breeding pair.

also since no one is mentioning this, the 2 star creatures have more health and defense and do more damage...it is always better to tame higher star creatures not just for the sake of being livestock.

I got a 2* coupled with a zero-star and the second piggy was born 2*.
The first born was zero-star.
So you just need one of them and a little patience.

2 stars give you 4 of each resource.

You also gain extra meat and hide (in your boar example) for a higher star rating. 1 star 2 meat and hide. i think 2 star give you 3 meat and hide.

breeding using a zero star and a one star has a 50% chance of a 1 star piggy... so continue feeding them until you get your preferred 1 star piggy..
