Surtling Cores
Hey all, just poking in to seek a little guidance as a new Valheim player.
I made it to my first dungeon as the quest had stated right after killing the first boss (deer guy). I cleared the entire place out, but was only able to find four surtling cores. I went to my base to check the requirements for the basic smelter / coal maker. Both seem to require five.
Am I just unlucky? I've heard other forums and posts say they've gotten 10+ in one area. I'm stuck with wood and flint items, but have been given the location of the next boss via the stone I found in the burial chambers. Is it safe to say I shouldn't be trying the next boss without something better than leather armor and a wooden bow / flint spear? And if so, what should I do now the first chamber I cleared is completely empty?
Thanks in advance for any help received...

Alright thanks! They're a renewable resource, but only once you reach the swamp.

Practice swimming along a bank. You don't want to be stuck in deeper water when your stamina runs out. Then you will get an idea of how much river you can safely cross.

Forget about the raft (Well, maybe for short trips.) They are VERY slow and a long trip will get VERY boring (if you're lucky). Work on finding more Burial Chambers, getting more surtling cores and metal ore, making better armor and weapons. Along that line you will get the recipe for a decent boat which you will probably need to get to the next boss. Give any other biomes beyond meadows and black florist a wide berth. You're not ready and it's depressing to lose your stuff where you can't retrieve it.

Not unlucky, I've seen as few as one or even none (once), and as many as a dozen or more. For me the average seems to be needing two or three dungeon expeditions to get to at least five, preferably a dozen, to start with. Five is workable, just build kiln first, make 6x as much coal as the amount of bronze you figure to get early on, then deconstruct it and build a smelter.

Keep looking for more burial grounds. Each are filled by RNG. Some you get real lucky, others not so much. A normal sized Black Forest have multiple burial grounds.

You need to find at least one more so you can switch between kiln and smelter. If there isn't more dungeons on your island, the only option is to build a raft and sail to different area.

I was wondering about that. So you do have to build a raft and it's not a great idea to swim right?

Depends entirely on the distance and what waits on the other side. If you practice swimming a bit and eat lots of stamina foods, you can swim across most rivers and sometimes to small offshore islands. When in doubt, or if you expect danger on the other side, use the best boat you have (raft early on).
I would not advise going into the Ocean on a raft. Doing a 360 barrel roll during a storm is only fun before the monsters eat you.

Yeah, I can imagine that doesn't sound like a lot of fun. As far as ocean to lake to river, is there a way to tell the difference other than distance? Does the water change colors, etc?

Least that I've found was zero, most was 27. It's random.

Do surtling cores respawn or are they a finite resource?

Well when you go from offshore to further out the biome will change, can see that on your map/mini-map. Lakes may have an ocean in the middle... eh ocean is mainly a depth thing in Valheim. Rivers/streams are just ribbons of water, no color changes that I'm aware of, though ocean changes with weather I believe.
