Er, yeah - aside from maybe some server admin, auto backup and performance optimisation stuff there's no way to know what you might want to change without playing the core game as-is. There's nothing broken that actually *needs* mods, they're all for variety and convenience.

If you gonna use mods, use them with r2modman, it makes the whole modding easy and can easily switch back to vanilla. Like the others, I recommend 1 full clear on Vanilla and THEN experiment with mods.. cuz really my wife and I completed our 2nd playthrough too easily with heavy modding and it just didn't feel the same..

First I suggest you play the vanilla game so you can determine what mods are of interests to you. QoL should be your first go to if you feel some time sinks are too tedious ( I find most of them relaxing so It depends on personal preference), when you eventually go trough most of the content and you still "need" more you have a bunch of armor/enemies/weapons/tools/builds mods that would satisfy most players.

I tried most of the popular mods and eventually went back to vanilla but the only mod I can truly recommend is crafting with containers it helps so much with base building and keeping track of how much mats you have

damn I wanna know too. Playing with Vulkan solves some fps issues but they are still there.

Mod is called "Custom Graphics Settings". I got it from Nexus, not sure if its available on other sites. It basically adds a lot of extra things you can change via a config file(no draw distance though, for that you need render limits).

Like others I would recommend Vanilla for a first impression.

I say this even as the majority of my mods are chosen to take away the tedium of grinding. Understanding where the game intends to limit you is not a bad place to start.

After that. Farm Grid for sure. I personally will not play solo without Unrestricted Portals anymore. I also like the QOLPins mod simply so I don't have to constantly manage all the map pins myself.

Can I recommend no mods whatsoever? I just really like the vanilla experience myself. :) If you just got started, you may not need it yet.

Vanilla

I would suggest you play the game as-is for as long as you can, before using mods. This way, you can appreciate both renditions of the game - the core concept as idealised by the developers, and the re-imagination by the fans.

Once you get to the point of modding it, I would use the most basic one: Valheim Plus (from the Thunderstore and Bepinex) which tweaks a lot of the game elements to fit one's style.

Also, I would suggest you turn of Cloud Syncing/Saving for Valheim until IGS fixes the issue of some people losing saves.

vanilla ..but hey your choice..but keep in mind its EA so your mod selections may break the game until moddev updates to an update as they happen

FarmGrid ist a must-have for me, because I get frustrated with the vanilla planting system very quick.
Other than that: Some HD-textures ( I like willybachs most) plus other mods that enhance graphics or performance, like render limits and custom graphics.

Performance of this game can be somewhat bad, because by default it only uses 512MB vram max(and probably because its not optimized yet), you might want to increase that....that is what the custom graphics mod is for.

That might differ from GPU to GPU and the settings. Prior to opening the game, my GPU used 1.3GB of VRAM @ 34c temp. While Valheim is opened, the GPU is using 2.2GB of VRAM @ 54c temp. Perhaps it's dependent on the max VRAM your GPU has?

Regardless, the HD texture mod and FarmGrid are great mods to use.

That doesn't seem right, it's using at least 1GB of dedicated GPU memory for me. But I guess it's entirely possible the results may vary from system to system.
