Due to that being a server issue, I would assume that you are SoL. The red cross comes when someone clicks on an already set marker. It's a function of the map.

In this case, if you don't have a backup (and sadly, most people don't even though they should), I recommend using the devcommands to respawn what you lost.

If you played before Hearth & Home update, then a tombstone markers (skull) was displayed on the map, only to be replaced by the next death's marker, which was problematic in case of several deaths in sequence. But tombstones themselves were everlasting in game, until emptied, and they could work as permanent chests indeed.

If you play now, then a tombstone marker is displayed on the map for each and every one death, and they have to be deleted manually, as said by AlphaTrion. Tombstones proper work the same as before.

Best time to locate a lost tombstone is by nigh, as you know.

Playing on a server would mean your paying for said server. We have a server and pay 20$ a month CAD. Needs to be manually updated every update and is passworded.

If you right click on skull on the map it will remove it.
