Switching from manual modding to Vortex ... help needed.
Hi,
May I first say that I'm an "elderly gamer" and don't have a lot of computer skills ...
I've got a few mods in my game (about 15), all added manually, and everything works.
But I'd like to move over to Vortex and expand my mod list. I think it would be easier to "review" my mod list and adapt my game if I was looking at the Vortex screen and not just in the BepinEx folder.
Do i need to delete everything and start again?
(I would like to keep my save, if possible)
Or would rebuilding my mod list just overwrite the files in my Valheim game folder and allow me to continue building?
I do try to take my time ... and read everything about the mod installation on Nexus but to be honest, I'm just following instructions and don't really understand what I'm doing.
I've got a couple of hundred hours into my game so I'm at the stage where I can look for "extras" that I think I'd like to play with.
If this helps in anyway ... I'll write out the mods I'm using at present:
Any Portal
Better UI
Clock
Craftable chain
Gamepad interact text fix
Gravekeeper
Map Sharing Made easy
Pickable Time Fix Mod
Planting Plus
Ragnarsrokare auto pickup selector
Time mod
Trash items
Use equipment in water
ValheimPlus
... and I think ... Better trader ... there is a file called that in my BepinEx/plugins folder.
These mods come from when I played with some friends on their server .. and were "required".
Tbh ... I prefer to play solo and at my own pace.
So any help would be most appreciated ... I just hope I can understand the replies and also hope I've explained myself well enough for anyone to help.
Best wishes
Alan

Vortex will install Bepinex automatically when you tell it to manage Valheim. This is essential to Mod Valheim, but it is automatic. Some mods do indeed have pre-reqs, but when you click the install with Vortex link from the Nexus, if any are needed a popup page listing them will appear before it installs the mod, this popup page will have links to install them as well. Also on the Nexus there is a tab for pre-reqs that list any needed for the mod in question, or any other mods that require the one you chose. The Nexus is by far the best resource you can find for modding this game. Additionally, if there is no "Install with Vortex" on the Nexus page for the mod you want, then you most likely have to install it manually. As I said there are a few that have to be installed manually because Vortex will place files in incorrect directories, so I would still recommend reading the install instructions for every mod you use.
I have not had the issues the person in Discord was talking about myself, but anything is possible.
Your save files are located in "C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim"
Just keep in mind some aspects of your save file require assets from the mods you have been using. If you reinstall the mods however it should work just fine.
Have fun, and if you have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you for that reply, RangerHawk ... sorry for my delay but I was watching "footie on the tele"
Ok ... I'll start from scratch and rebuild.
I just hope I do it without mistakes because I seem to remember a few quirks regarding extra programs I needed to install during my manual setup ... hopefully the various mod instructions will keep me on the right path.
I'd still like to use my save when I restart ... do I just move it to a different location before I uninstall the game?? ... oh, and where is it?
And finally ... when I started playing this game a few months ago my friends on the server said it was best to go for manual install because of problems with Vortex.
I asked on their Discord about this and received this reply ...
"I don't know if it got fixed or not. Basically what it was doing was acting like NMM where it would not properly remove mod added files, and it would also randomly add mod files as well. I can look into it more if you want though"
I'm presuming that those problems are ok now as I couldn't see anything on the main forum about this.

Vortex will not be able to manage mods installed manually. As far as Vortex would be concerned those are original game files. Not to say that you could not start using Vortex as is, but I'd suggest uninstalling, deleting the game folder, and reinstalling from scratch. If you choose to do this do not forget to delete the Valheim folder as uninstalling through Steam will leave all the modified, and extra files from your manually installed mods. The main benefit in doing a fresh install is being able to drop in and out mods, and tracking down conflicts. There are a few mods that still need to be manually installed, but you will see that on their Nexus page. I use Vortex myself, and currently have about 80 mods installed. LOL, Only real problem I have is having to remap and remember so many different hot keys.
There is no real problem with doing all this manually, and not using a mod manager like Vortex. It just gets increasingly difficult as you add more mods, to change what you have installed. Vortex automates all this.
***Edit*** I forgot to mention, one of the best aspects of using Vortex is you can have it check for mod updates, and have it run the update for you. This benefit is twofold, 1st, Game modders sometimes add features, 2nd, but more importantly they also squash bugs, and update when the game is updated and breaks their mod. You have to remember, this game is still in beta, and as such is getting new revisions often.
If you have any specific questions, do not hesitate to ask.
Good luck from a fellow older gamer.
