Like other comments...The Spear is actually one of the best weapons...when used CORRECTLY! So get gud. Sorry I've been meaning to tell someone this and you're my random victim.

Surely there's some bonus to the axe- if it isn't allowed to hit multiple enemies? (I thought it could..)

The bonus is that it can cut trees. Same goes for two-handed axes.

And it can cleave multiple enemies, but there's damage loss.

I'm surprised the atgeir fanbois haven't chimed in to laud how great the bronze atgeir is. Personally, I'm a spear user and have been since before the hearth and home update. I love the spear. I love its versatility, I love its style, and I love you can pair it with shield. But for the love of god, can we reserve the slot it occupies when thrown? I can't say how many fights I've been in where I switch to fists because I picked up a random Draugr trophy and now my spear can't be retrieved.

IMO, Spear needs tech level love. Why is there no black metal spear but there's a black metal atgeir? Are we trying to say the wolf fang spear is SO GOOD, it can compete with the blackmetal version of the sword, axe and atgeir? I think not.

Because not every biome needs every type of weapon. Fang spear is perfectly viable in plains.

The situation is reversed in mountains, there's no silver atgeir.

Still doesn’t change the fact that axes are fundamentally weaker than swords due to the latter’s lack of a multi-target penalty, since both deal the same damage, have essentially identical dps and deal the same damage type.

Imo, maces are the best melee weapons, followed by atgeirs, swords, spears and knives. Axes are the worst. I don’t consider sledge weapons to be primary weapons, so I didn’t include them (I find them useful, though)

I rarely hit more than one enemy at a time, so it doesn't really matter to me. Still, it's a valid argument.

I started with the spear, because it was superior to the club. But once I got the sword, none of the spears have appealed to me at all.

i saw a viking spearthrow a big ash gjall to death. it looks pretty fun but you have to pick it up everytime ;/

The axe is the weakest weapon. The spear is actually one of the strongest. Low stamina use, low resource cost, moderate damage and good Z axis coverage down.

What are you talking about?! Spear is the best starting weapon. It’s cheap and it can be used for fighting and hunting. Attack speed is great and dmg is good too, especially against Black Forest mobs. With lvl 3 bronze spear and bronze buckler you can kill a troll in 5 seconds.

I use it all the time. All my friends started using it too. Until i reach the swamp, my spear skill is 50-60 so it doesn’t use much stamina and gives a decent dmg output. I don’t even need a bow until mountains and I need it in mountains only for drakes.
There is only a couple of enemies that are highly resistant to pierce, and for them i use a mace or an axe.

It really depends what you prefer in a battle, reach, speed, sheer damage, or flexibility with secondary attacks.

It would be boring if all weapons functioned exactly same, and it's totally ok to not like a weapon class and prefer another instead, so long as you know what it means to you and how it changes your situation at any given engagement.

It is the strongest one what are you on about lol.

Most versitile, lvels up faster than anything else, least inventory slots used (you can pretty much drop bow and even shield, and use axe as sidearm), easiest repair*, least resources to craft, highest attack hitbox, lowest (throw) reach as well. Effective when jumping too extending reach even further. Similar or better stamina per damage as any other weapon. Easiest to reach stagger by damage on enemies. Easiest to hit and run, easiest to make sneak attacks with. Arguably the highest melee reach depending on how you look at it.

Since in extended fights the DPS that matter is damage per *stamina*, the spear has as good "damage" as any other weapon. The raw damage only is not as good as some frost empowered weapons due to its resitance ignoring effect, but thats a tradeoff. As is multihit penalty.

But i do agree it needs love, to have a proper legendary/magical version like other weapons have...


*-you can literally play with flint spear up to and including plains, its the only early weapon (besides 2nd bow) that does not feel miserable at that point. And it needs only 10 wood bench to repair.

There's already an actual harpoon that you can make and use.
