I would like to point out that Mods are not supported. When a update happens, it can break your save until the mod author's update them.
Use at your own risk.

Anything we recommend right now will have an asterisk next to it because of yesterday's update. So check to make sure these are working.
It really depends on what you want to do. Some people think that all mod are cheats. Do you want to add more content? Quality of life? Make things harder instead of easier? Cosmetic changes?
I'm playing with ValheimRaft this time around which lets you build your own ship, which you can use as a mobile base. I had to loosen up building restrictions so I could put a campfire on my boat since I'm not up to iron age and stonecutting yet.
PlantEverything might be considered a cheat because it lets you plant raspberry and blueberry bushes, although the default settings have it so you need five of an item in order to place a node (for harvesting berries, mushrooms, flint etc.) so you still need to save up material if you want a farm. I got it so I could do landscaping to make my builds look nicer.
I second Valheim Plus (and hope they get it updated soon). You can make things very cheaty or go the other way and increase difficulty if you prefer. There are lots of quality of life options in it too.

I am building a list for my friend so I will just do that here and copy-paste for her.
This is a list that me and my OTHER friend have been using on our dedicated for a few days now and we have no complaints:
This is a list that me and my OTHER friend have been using on our dedicated for a few days now and we have no complaints:
- Bepinex -- Not a mod per se, but a framework almost all other mods rely on.[valheim.thunderstore.io]
- Jotunn the Valheim Library -- Also a prerequisite for many mods.[www.nexusmods.com]
- Adventure Backpacks -- Adds craftable backpacks with various buff effects which effectively gives you a chest you can carry with you. Anything you place inside it is treated like it weighs half as much.[www.nexusmods.com]
- Balrond's Containers -- Various containers that change appearance based on what you put in them. Works with all vanilla items.[www.nexusmods.com]
- Balrond Shipyard -- Allows you to modify the Karve and Drakkar to add different sails, HP, lamps for light and heat, an anchor to stop the boat quickly while aboard, and oars for extra speed[www.nexusmods.com]
- Bone Appetit -- New foods and food prep constructables.[www.nexusmods.com]
- Valharvest -- A submod of Bone Appetit with lots of vegetables and more food in general.[www.nexusmods.com]
- Plant Everything -- Literally lets you plant every plant in the game. You can even plant things that aren't plants, like pickable branches and stones, which then act as ordinary spawners-- also lets you REMOVE those spawners with a cultivator.[www.nexusmods.com]
- Cart Support -- Lowers the effective weight of the cart by 20% for each additional person near the cart. Yes, it counts if they ride on the cart.[www.nexusmods.com]
- Speedy Paths -- Gives a speed boost (or reduction if you want to configure it that way) based on what surface you are standing on, with default speed increases made to dirt and stone paths and all types of wood, stone and metal floors. The speed of each surface is individually configurable.[www.nexusmods.com]
- Extended Player Inventory -- By default, adds 5 slots separated from your common inventory for any gear you are wearing, and adds three hotkey slots bound by default (configurable) to z, x and c. You can also configure this to add rows to your inventory.[www.nexusmods.com]

Valheim looks gorgeous, please don't change anything cosmetic wise.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and mods are made specifically to give the beholder whatever they desire.
Valheim may be gorgeous, but it could be gorgeouser (that's a word, I've decided).

How do mods work in multiplayer situations? For example, the "monsters drop loot faster" mod sounds awesome. If I have that mod, and I'm playing on a server with one of my buddies who don't have the mod, what happens?

if that's a server's mod then the question is "does the server has this mod ?". How do mods work in multiplayer situations? For example, the "monsters drop loot faster" mod sounds awesome. If I have that mod, and I'm playing on a server with one of my buddies who don't have the mod, what happens?

Depends on the mods. Some are client-side, some are server-side. How do mods work in multiplayer situations? For example, the "monsters drop loot faster" mod sounds awesome. If I have that mod, and I'm playing on a server with one of my buddies who don't have the mod, what happens?
If they are client-side, then other players won't need them. If they are server-side, then usually all players will need it.

You can usually ignore the issue of whether a mod is client-side or server-side by just making sure that everyone has the same mod setup.
The easiest way to do this is to set your mods up so that everything works the way you want on a local game. Then, once you're satisfied, go into your /[steam install]/common/Valheim directory and copy the following folders and files
BepInEx (folder)
doorstop_libs (folder)
unstripped_corlib (folder)
doorstop_config.ini
start_game_bepinex.sh
start_server_bepinex.sh
winhttp.dll
COPY these into a .zip file and upload it to a file hosting service like google drive and have your friends copy the contents into their own /[steam install]/common/Valheim directories and your will all have duplicate mod setups. Even if you've custom configured the mods, that's all included and they'll have the same config.
There are very few exceptions where this doesn't work, most of which are mods which just weren't designed to work with multiplayer. But it's only a subset of those, since even if a mod is client-side only, everyone will have exactly the same client-side mods.

Depends on what you consider a "cheat". Valheim Plus is *the* go-to mod with countless options that affect gameplay to varying degrees (all of your choosing). *Not working with the current version of the game; needs an update*
Then there's Instant Monster Loot Drop, which does what it says. No more waiting 15 seconds for that troll to finish falling over.
