Lost Stuff
I've lost all my iron loot and don't know where the death marker is. Any suggestions?

If corpses despawn , it's also a recent addition, because corpses used to last indefinitely (never despawn) so you could find your body days later... I have personally done that.
You should play the latest update (hearth and home) or at least read the patch bites before giving advice next time.
The death markers on the map even note the day you died now. 😂
I have read all the patch notes, including H&H and even just went back to read through all of them again, and see no mention of death markers whatsoever.... likely part of the "and more" statement at the bottom of the partial list of notes for H&H??
Anyhow I have been playing H&H, but so far haven't died, so the information I gave was based on what was true, pre-H&H where only one death marker would appear, and that being the last place the player died, as well as the fact that death statues, containing the players' gear, was persistent meaning would not de-spawn until the gear was collected.
so your 'advice' to me is to read the patch notes before giving advice, so please explain to me WHERE in the patch notes it mentions death markers... Maybe YOU should read the patch notes yourself next time.

I have personally done that. that's definitely incorrect. the markers stay til removed (unless you use mods). i know it for a fact cuz i tend to use them as a mementos of days i stupidly died.
on the other hand i've read that corpses despawn after some time (i believe it's 1hr or so).

Yeah since H&H the corpse markers all stay on the map. They even added a tab on the right to filter them on and off.
Grave markers do not despawn over time,
There are cases where tombstones are magically lost, but that is a bug/glitch in the game. Although you can die in a place you can not get to without death so it's lost. But it is obvious and easy to avoid.

ANY time you die, the first thing you should always do is open the map and MARK the death location (double click map to add icon) even though the default death icon should be there, mark the map with your OWN marker.. If you die again (before you recover your gear) the original death marker will disappear and move to the new death spot, (which makes you lose track of where to get your gear back). IF you have marked your map yourself, you will still have the original location, if you happen to die on the way back to get your gear.
I know this doesn't help AFTER you have lost your death location, but for future reference... Mark your map when you die.

Last week I had a furling raid on my poorly defended base and died 4 times before the foolish Berzerkers trashed my wolf breeder. Needless to say that turned them all into wolf p**p in short order. After reclaiming my gear on the tombstones (I had backup armor and weapons on them) I looked at my map and there were 4 little skull and crossbones still splashed over my base...
If there are multiple death statues shown on the map, it was put in during a recent update. It used to be that only one death statue would show on the map and it was always only the latest death.

as i said i've only read it. never tried to find out myself cuz i don't die that often. and if i can't retrieve my corpse in a span of 10 minutes (duration of the "no skills losts" buff)... i usually give up and\or call for help of friends. If corpses despawn , it's also a recent addition, because corpses used to last indefinitely (never despawn) so you could find your body days later... Hit M to bring up your map and look for a skull thingy. Tabs on right can toggle things on and off.
