Do fires/torches/etc. use fuel when you are not there?
I like fire and light....so I build a lot of light sources at my bases, even the remote outpost ones. I have them go out and need refueling all the time, but it's not like I'm sitting around watching them even when I'm at my bases.
So my question is, are they continuously burning fuel based on elapsed time in the world, even when I'm off in an entirely different area? Or do they 'freeze' when the area they are in isn't loaded?
I've noticed some things in the game work like the former (crops, smelters, kiln, etc.), but others work like the latter (enemies, mostly), and I couldn't find a definitive answer with a google search.

Oh, that's brilliant! Thanks for the tip. You can also use a Dverger circlet on an armor stand for a fairly bright, somewhat directable light source, that needs no fuel.

Afaik yes they do burn their fuel even when you are not nearby. are they continuously burning fuel based on elapsed time in the world, even when I'm off in an entirely different area?

Yes they continue to use fuel. It lasts a long time though, torches (other than the wood one) and sconces last over 33 hours with a full fuel load

Thank you both! That's what I thought, but I wanted to make sure.
Knowing that for sure, I'll stop refueling at least the outside ones when I'm not actually going to be there and outside. It's kind of tedious going around to refuel those particular ones.

Use surtling trophies as lights at your front door, work well and don't use fuel. Inside use the little yellow shrooms on a stand where you need some light but not a lot, like on a second floor. Potion bottles also make a nice light, the yellow ones, green a bit garish.
When fall seasonal item pops, the turnip jack o'lanterns are pretty fun and cast a nice light. Look great on the ovens.
