Rolling Back
Does anyone have a working method for rolling back updates in this game?
I love popping back into Valhiem to continue with seeds I've already started to build, but lately every bloody update breaks the game and forces me to start over. I know how to flag steam not to update until start and all, but is there a method for actually rolling back to a working build?

I need some help understanding how to load a prior save of a game. I'm trying to load it back to a point before a troll smashed two important BB bushes. But using the old files empties the world, everything i built is gone, and land is back the way it was. Help!?

No, because the game is perfect as is and if you try to roll it back it is because you are impatient and the game probably isn't for you.

If that was directed at me you missed the mark. I've already got close to 1000 hours in game.
Dude every little update just breaks my mods and it pisses me off.
Exactly, and for nothing more than stupid rabbit or a new color of mushroom.
Copy the Valheim directory somewhere else on your computer. Mod it up and never fear about mods breaking again. Dude every little update just breaks my mods and it pisses me off.
The one thing I forgot to do. I made the mistake of checking the vanilla loader instead of running it through MO2 and shot myself in the foot. I'll be making a full backup as soon as I bother updating the mods... AGAIN
Thanks for the replies. But I'm done with this crap until the full Mistlands update comes out, then I'll patch and backup the folder.

For rolling back to a previous Version of a Steam Game I saw this video which showed how to do it for No Man's Sky (NMS) using Steam Data Base (DB)

Hope that helps Avrie

This works on a Linux system and should work on Windows as well but I can't test it.
Sadly unless you alerady have a backup of a working version of the game this won't help much.
So,once you get Valheim working set the files in the Valheim game folder to "read-only" and make a backup.
The read-only will keep Steam from updating the game or applying any of hte little hotfixs that get sent out every so often. The world and character files are in a different directory and won't be effected.
BUT when a full update like todays rolss out Steam tries harder to apply an update and will report a disk write failure and not let you start the game. This is where the back up comes in to play. change the atributes of the Valheim game folder back to read/write and let Steam update the game. THis is so the Steam client THINKS the most recent update has been applied since it keeps track of it in a file somewhere other than the Valheim folder.
After Steam has updated the game delete the folder and replace it with the game folder in teh backup you made earlier. After that checnge the folder to read only again and enjoy the game.
NOTE: if you use mods be sure to keep the BepInEX folder writable so the mods can update/create their config files in teh BepInEX folder.
Yes it is a hassle to do this but it keeps the game playable while the devs at IG figure out how to actually program. I'm still playing version .209 with all my mods installed and likely will remain at that version for the near future.
Hope this is useful to someone else..

Thanks, but I've already beat vanilla into submission. I'll probably just sideline the game until the full mistlands release. I'm only running a handful of mods, but they're all based off Beplex which seems to be what breaks with each update. I can't play without VaheimPlus. What a difference it makes.

Since the devs have also screwed up the "old" version you could set the game to, there are a few people on reddit who have rolled back. I followed the guide and used the info provided to do it also, and it is working great.

I have been going back and playing old worlds without issue. They all seem to load fine.
I have never modded though. So updates never broke my game.
If you mod your game that is just the risk you are taking.

If you are going back unmodded and playing unmodded worlds try a clean install by deleting the game folder. <saves in another location> and verify.

I appreciate the game is still in early release and updates are needed and expected, it just rubs me totally the wrong way when every "minor" update breaks the game and basically makes me throw away hundreds of hours of building for a minor update to some stupid rabbit we're not even going to see until Mistlands are finished. This newest "Beta" won;t even display properly on my load screen.

Honestly, until they have something like this in place, I've decided not to play at all. Ever since they decided to go with micro-updates, most patches have caused problems sometimes to the point of unplayability. Until I'm able to control the version I want to play and have others be able to play with me, I really don't see the point in frustrating myself with it.

You and I are on the same page @sarteck I'd be happy if they would just pre-announce updates and provide us the option of opting out of everything but major updates.

I don't have a rolling back strategy, just some general info:
- The latest update introduced a default-old branch that in the future should have the latest stable version before every update.
- Updates are tested on the Public Test Branch (PTB), so whenever you see an announcement for that, that's your indicator that a new update will soonish hit the main branch.
- Participating in the tests is entirely optional, but the more people help, the less buggy the update will be once it's pushed live.
- There is no reason to abandon your characters or worlds unless you use outdated mods. Modding is not officially supported yet, so you need your mod authors to update their mod. If you insist on modding Valheim, you should keep backups before and use a mod manager that alerts you to updates and allows you to start the vanilla game without deleting all mod data.
- If you have trouble finding your save data since the overhaul of the save system, check out the pinned FAQ in General Discussions or the pinned guide in the Bugs & Technical Issues sub-forum. If that info doesn't help recover your save files, please open a thread in the Bugs sub-forum with as much info about your situation as possible.

I feel for you. Same thing has happened to me now 3x. I just spent 3 days getting it even running again by finding a workaround.
You could try System Restore if you are using Windows to take the game back but eventually, you're going to have to update the game.
What I will suggest is that you save your character and world files on a separate file on your desktop or wherever. Sometimes you can get your world or your toon back reloading that way.
