You are being hunted
You are being hunted - triggers 4-6 wolves attacking at once and being back filled almost immediately after each kill to a total of 13+ wolves.
This first happened when I was on a mountain and decided to run because with wolves once your some way of the mountain they retreat but not this pack.
I have since moved on from the mountain and hunt for black metal in the plains and have since been attacked twice. I am now older and wiser and took to high ground where I killed them all with a bow ).
Having wolves run about the plains chewing on green goblins was amusing.
My opinion - they respawn a little too fast not allowing a single player a fighting chance to take on with sword/shield. So if your caught out in the open it's a death sentence.
Please keep this in as it adds to the suspense. Great Game.

It's just a lame event.
Unless you're prepared every second of every game day and never travel anywhere too far away from a place to tree yourself, it's mostly just a programmed death. Save us the time and make it a "Sudden heart attack event"
Stop and stack rocks to stand on is ridiculous. And if the game mechanics results in ridiculous outcomes they need to be looked at.

It would help if mobs knew how to jump thin moats so it wasn't such a cheap tactic.
If a 2m moat could be jumped, players would make a 3m moat...or a 2m one with raised earth wall as the inside edge. It's very difficult to do this in a way that is not exploitable. And you vahe to consider how much you really want to keep people from doing it, if that's how they want to play.

One could argue that terrain manipulation is pretty OP in the real world too. 😀
There must be a reason for all those moats and earthen walls made throughout time.

Raising the ground seems to be a really overpowered means of fending off enemies lol. With the exception of those who can fly. The ones that do not fly seem to be helpless against that tactic. Was that intentional, or an oversight?
Fences, and spikes seem completely optional in this game. I haven't played that far in, so I can only hope that the defensive structures are useful at some point?

I highly doubt that they intended terrain manipulation to be as OP as it is, but you don't have to use it, in which case defensive structures are useful.
If you just want to protect yourself/stuff without thinking about it, build an earthen wall/moat, but if you enjoy the challenge, use the defensive structures as they were intended and figure out how to build a good defense with what you're provided.

OP: Here's a neat way to deal with something that many people find hard to deal with, especially when it first starts happening and you're still in Swamp gear.
Everyone else: Git gud and facetank them all. Learn to parry 100% of the time and it's EZ. I find it easy to deal with them with my endgame weapons and armor...you must really be bad.

I've seen the issue in other similar games as well. 7 days to die has taken measures to correct their issues, and I suspect this game will too. If so, I'm already ahead of the game by not using the terrain manipulation as a defence. :)

Terrain manipulation is OP in every game I can think of that has it, because "AI" (well, classic programmer coded logic for NPCs) is bad at navigating the terrain a player can create.

Blobs and oozers (and growths) might be able do that, or at least they can jump.
There are also flying mobs, introduced with ever-increasing intensity: Bats, drakes, deathsquitos, seekers, gjall. I wonder where we will go from here...

You don't need a hoe or atgeir to deal with wolves. You don't even need a shield if you are skilled enough with a weapon of your choosing (in terms of both skill levels and actual player skill). You can use the terrain to your advantage without manipulating it. Mobs don't understand what tar is, and since the wolves are hostile to every plains creature out there, you can pit the foes against one another. You may also run to a fuling village and circle around it without endangering yourself too much. You can also use shallow water to slow down the short-stature enemies like wolves and fulings, and punish them afterward with frost weapons. Swords are very good against wolves since they don't have cleave penalty and their damage output is enough to stagger wolves. Axes will work in a pinch but will require more hits when cleaving. Even if you're still using an iron axe, it can be sufficient: It has lower stamina cost than higher end weapons but should still be able to stagger wolves.
If you are in mountains, you can find the nearest rock and either use it as safe spot or take advantage of the ledges and make the wolves chase around while you proceed to leave the area and possibly lead the pack into another biome where they will attack other creatures. You can also find a frost cave or other overworld structure to defend yourself in, though I'm not sure how events work when you enter a dungeon instance.
If you have a combat-ability Forsaken power at hand – and you always should have one equipped when you are adventuring – now is the time to activate it. Eikthyr or Biomass power will trivialize most random encounters and should be saved for situations like this.

Atgeir or especially a spear really works wonders on being hunted events.
Even if you can't build up high enough so they can't follow, as w/ OP strategy, you can build up just a bit to get to slightly higher ground (or just find natural higher ground; rock or even a slope will do) with the above weapons and you're gold.
Once you get used to the event or just have a bit better armor, you can take them all out w/ spear or atgeir easily on the ground.

Sword and shield, with enough stamina and life you should fight them off and kill them.

Yup, as you said, the whole game pretty much requires players to assess their actions, learn from the circumstances, and adjust their survival behaviour. Indeed, the game requires tweaking, but overall, an interesting puzzle to solve.

a good tower shield can be a useful tool vs the wolf hunt, but yeah if they get on you as a group, it's pretty much nighty night time

I survived this event fighting with sword and shield several times. Plenty of loot. But it is dangerous indeed. I like it. Make sure not to run out of stamina when they come.
