Convinced now the game is designed to interfere with you.
What I mean by this is, if you're trying to explore, almost every night will be a no moon, cloudy, foggy night so you can't see two inches. If you're trying to build in a new spot, monster spawns increase so you're constantly being interfered with and getting attacked.
Today I thought to put up a sort of harborage wall around where my ship was docked, because of near constant greydwarf attacks any time I turned my back. As soon as a I had a few walls in place... the ocean began to rise. At first only a little, but soon it was lifting me off my feet not once every few minutes, but every few *seconds*, sometimes only letting me touch my feet down long enough to almost draw my tool out before it lifted me again. This ONLY happened when I started working out in the water. All other times, the greydwarves and myself were able to stand on the bottom easily. And this isn't the first time I've noticed things suddenly being a problem only when you're trying to get something else done.

It does feel like this but after you play a long time you will notice seasons like wet lightning strikes and then some foggy days and then some dryer with full moon very pretty. You shouldn't be out at night lol lots more dangers and especially grey dwarfs they live in the nights.
100% agree with the sailing thats so obvious its sad. The moment we get out to the open seas storms lighing huge waves and the sea serpent appears. I miss sailing with clear skies these days even in daytime..
Craft campfies greywolf are afraid of the fires.
But have fun :)

You end up becoming powerful enough to stroll through swamps and mountains, even the plains, and just putting off attacks while you build. The workbenches stop random spawns within their radius also contributes to the feelings you describe. As far as my docks went I ended up embedding workbenches inside the stone blocks as part of their design then adding some stakes underwater as they futilely threw themselves into that area of the water constantly. Not because greydwarves were any threat to me by then but because it was just annoying not to be able to sleep right away or listen to them.
Regarding the water changes, I built on calm days and ended up using the water level to build a wet dock that works great with some effort and using the hoe to build up land underwater for the foundation. Convenient to launch ships or destroy them to transport through portals without fear of losing the nails.

I found 1 little patch where only a lone greydwarf bothers me. Its a small mountain area and isn't high enough to have any actual mountain spawns. It gets a lone greydwarf spawn about 3 times during the day. When nigth falls, the greydwarf runs back to the black forest and its totally peaceful the entire night. I am building with 40 life at night in mountains. Very strange for this game.
