Valheim Location Calculations
As we await the Mistlands update, I was drawn to the developer notes on whether our existing seeds will inherit the Mistlands update or if we would need to begin a fresh seed. The notes specifically mention that area rendering will take effect when a new part of the map is within 300 to 500 meters of a player's position. This made me curious as to how Valheim calculates position and distance. Our handheld geodetic devices typically display positions with latitude, longitude and altitude but 3D distances rely upon some cartesian system with X, Y and Z. Valheim seed maps employ a cartesian pattern but there may be some variations in the assignment of axis. In some systems, X most closely resembles east-west (longitude), Y most closely resembles north-south (latitude) and Z most closely resembles displacement from earth-center (altitude). Other systems may swap the Y and Z references. In Valheim, the 'pos' command seems to follow the later interpretation. But as long as the interpretation is consistent, then coordinates can be fed into any 3D distance calculator and displacement from two points accurately calculated. If we look again at seed maps, we can see that a Valheim seed runs from +10000 West to -10000 East and +10000 North to -10000 South. The key question is whether the distance from the North to the South poles is indeed 20km or some other metric. Assuming that the distance from 0,0,0 to 0,1,0 is 1 meter, a player is advised to remain 0.5 km away from the Mistlands to get the update into their existing seed. Too much work? Just bring in a new seed.

i just did a few quick dead reckonings.. my main base is 90 2m lengths wide and long so 180 meters takes up almost half the height and width of the minimap..so minimap is a bit larger than 400 meters by 400 meters.. i then went to undiscovered area on my seed.. and it appears fog of war dissapears around 50 to 80 meters (terrain was uneven :-) )
so hypothesis time (guessing more likely) haldors bubble is a sphere/circle... so too heat from a fire so im guessing distance from "mistlands" will be a sphere. if the distance they are quoting is 300 to 500 meters then imho that means " not "revealed"on or by your minimap!". i deliberately didnt explore any mountains.. only just spotted their edges prior to ice caves update.. it appears the caves may have seeded despite me having circled but not entered two mountain areas..
as to your question about world size..i am unable to even try to answer that with the limited "discovery i have made in this seed"
but in my continuing to guess mode: here goes !! :-) if the minimap were 500 meters x 500meters an explorer would need only travel 20 minimaps north and 20 minimaps south to guaranteed hit one of the "poles" If the world is indeed a 40 x40 minimap world equalling 20k's x 20k's

Lol that's literally what was said originally when updates were affecting map generation, about 500m radius. Nice showing of calculation 👍
Will have to wait and see, I'm wondering if I'll just have a bunch of dead spots of unloaded mistlands and the old placeholder going by the current theory, but will they spawn enemies or remain devoid of enemies?

The distance to you for world generation is probably the same distance as triggering of the Trader in the world. Honestly all these in game "measurements" are kind of meaningless without some actual point of reference that is in scale to it.
In terms of the "sphere" theory I actually tried to build over a trader... it isn't actually the sphere you see it is more of a cone with very sheer walls and what must be a super high point. It did taper in a bit as it went up but could only go so far.

the game actually loads 64 x 64m blocks so at all times there are 9 blocks loaded with you always being in the center block.

There have been extensive discussions both here on Steam and on the official Valheim Discord. A search will likely reveal them.
That said , if you see mistlands in the distance best to avoid them if you want to keep an older map for the new update. Also, it is unusual for people to "uncover" the entire map although it has been done by many. There will likely be ample untouched Mistlands for you to discover even with fairly heavy exploration of your map.
Worst case scenario? You take your favorite character / items to a new seed, or even a new gen on the same seed. And have at it. Building is fun.

I guess a question remains if this is like an event horizon. Once you can see something in the distance that resembles the Mistlands, the seed is contaminated for the update and a new seed will be needed. On seed maps, Mistlands, Ashlands and Far North seem to be generated at the extreme 5 km edges of the map. So, one heuristic would be to remain within 5 km of the stone circle as we explore the other biomes. My seed had the first four Forsaken within that 5 km radius and I'll hold off on Yagluth until the update. I suspect that the update will require Yagluth to be engaged again in order to get any change to the "Yagluth Thing" anyway.
