Pigs

I've read the wikki on domestication but I don't see how it works in practice. The pigs if they are aware will attack.

I don't see that pigs/wolves will willingly jump into a pit.

AFAIK this only applies to special spawns, such as near rune stones telling about boars and village-boars (these are the only two IIRC). Randomly spawned boars will not want to wander back, but the ones who do, will try to do that even after taming.

But the special spawns can span starred boars despite being close to the original spawn point (with the boss stones). Typically, you want to tame the special spawned starred boars on their spot and only move their offspring (as they do not want to wander back anymore) ... which can be really time-consuming (but possible).

I'd just build a base far away, and forget these special spawns, they are not worth it IMHO (unless find a good spot to build a base next to a spacial spawn). Just wait for a regular one.

As for taming, it is good to know you still need to be somewhat near for the taming process to "tick" (the range is in the wiki, it's quite large actually). So arrange so that you have some chores you can do somewhat near the enclosure (but far enough the pig will not aggro you, behind a wall etc...). Feeding / breeding will not need you to be close by.

As for the one guy asking: yes, two or more pigs will reproduce, as will other tameable animals.

Yeah, wolves eat through wooden walls in no time.

... if they're aggro'd, they sure can.

Throw some meat in there, and then get away from the pen.
Break line of sight, and get far enough away they can't hear or see you.

Using stakewalls helps greatly, as it breaks line of sight for you... but if you stand near the pen or outside the door, they can hear you... and will remain aggro'd.

Boars have a natural desire to return to their spawn point. Aggro them as far as you can, trap them in a pen, throw some food inside, and run off.

Valheim has a concept of "active zones" similar to minecraft chunk loading. Animals will only tame when their zone is active, so grab a chair and fishing pole and wait out the tame clock.

When you feed them they reproduce if there is enough space.

Yeah, wolves eat through wooden walls in no time.

What I do is trap the wolves in a pit I've dug in the ground, making sure there is feed there and that it's deep enough they cannot escape, and then hang around the pit until the wolves are tame. Once they are, they can be led out using either stairs or a ramp.

When taming boars, get a 1 or 2 star. More meat and leather.

Always keep an eye out for a 2 star

I don't think that they willingly wander into an enclosed space, and then you shut the door somehow? Seems to me that in this scenario you'd be sitting for quite some time waiting for a pig to show up and choose to wander into the trap.

No, you aggro them and let them chase you. They don't hurt, much. You can also jog along and just before they bite, sprint ahead. Keep doing that until you get them in your trap.

Yes,. This is how you do it. It's actually not that hard once you get the hang of it. The only drag on it, is that you must be relatively nearby . So, if you are not at a base there may not be much for you to do. Maybe some resource gathering, just not too far away.

You have to trap them in an enclosed area and leave some food on the ground, then it’ll take a few days before they become domesticated.

You have to sneak or remain out of sight, there must not be any open fire or torches in the area so they lose the aware status, then the taming process will start when they eat.
