Anyone else feel inspired/discouraged by BotM?
Builds of the month are rad but then I look at my current build in survival and the temptation to use devcommands is strong. I want to make my main base into a cool-ass palace but I also want to build it myself and I just can't see myself accomplishing that level in standard play. I'm sort of proud of what I have so far because I accomplished it myself but at the same time, BotM material it ain't.

I've taken a lot of inspiration from various vids I've seen youtube. I haven't incorporated any black marble as of yet, and I'm not sure that I will. I'm very happy with stone and black wood, with a lot of hidden iron beams and columns. No matter how much I have a firm idea of what I want to do, it winds up changing and morphing as I actually build it. I have a huge 3 level house with a major attached workshop/smelter/torture chamber etc........... plus a big old dock I built for my viking battleship and an attached vegetable garden. I lost count of the thousands of rocks I expended building this base to extend it outwards, making it troll-proof.
Everyone has different tastes and requirements, so getting jealous of another build is pointless. I'd simply change someone else's build to suit myself anyway. What certainly IS encouraging is that I've learned so many building tricks, getting better and better at 'snapping' my Valheim LEGO pieces together. I didn't feel like making a choice between style and defence, so I used a crapload of rock to separate myself from 'the mainland'. Only the bats bug me.
Now I'm faced with having to incorporate all this new crap from Mistlands, and I think I have to build a chicken coop as well. It never ever ends.
FWIW if I hadn't broken down and allowed myself to 'fly', I'd still be building some of my creations. I farmed the materials honestly but it was almost impossible to build some of my structures using temporary platforms etc (they're quite high). Some of my roof lines got a tad complex so being able to position myself accurately to find those wee snap points etc was key to success. No remorse lol. My game my rules. It's all about the fun. Sometimes I just get sick of farming iron and black metal, so I go all architect.

Form follows function and most the BotMs are sheer eye candy. To know them for what they are is important, to get an idea or two is even better but a lot of them would drag the frames to a crawn for a lot of rigs, and woe to those who do huge complicated bases in MP. Better than it was, but still problematic.
The thing that I find most annoying is seeing something that defies the gravity built into the game. But that's my pet peeve. Makes folks think they just aren't doing things correctly when what they see, in this game, won't work without the cheatiest of cheats.
I feel strongly that official builds of the month should be done with NO dev commands, NO mods, just vanilla, building as it was intended, all mats gathered by the builder. Gravity as it is set in the game. If you can spawn everything in, flatten everything perfectly, use resources you can't actually obtain, it doesn't have much value to players. Want to make something fancier, get to that level. Don't have enough resources, work for them. It's nice we have these fanciful builds but there should be full disclosure and there should be another category for them. The fact the game is EA, devs do not back up mods "officially" makes it even more problematic. Don't get me wrong, I like looking at them but then I like to see cool stuff. It just has no relationship to the Valheim I play which I think it too bad. We are so limited playing vanilla, it's just sad. UncleAcidic said it well. Get with it IG.
My complaint may be somewhat moot by difficulty sliders - but this is now, that will be what it is.

Yeah total discouraging, but most of them have mods that remove the building restrictions and add more rotation angles, so yeah they're in a different league cause they're playing a different game most of the time. botm becomes pointless since they're awarding it to builds that wouldn't exist within the rules of their game.

^Yup. A golden rule for singleplayer games is to not concern yourself with others, focus on the game *you* want to play and your own accomplishments. BOTM is just silly from that perspective but can still serve as some inspiration from time to time.

my survival builds are about functionality and defense. my creative builds are about style and detail. i have never felt bad that the survival build didn't look as good as the creative build because the survival build simply doesn't need to be ornate or even nice looking. you can totally do that if you want, it's really about how much time and effort you want to devote to it. I love to watch the great builders build and then incorporate various techniques of theirs into my own methods. you can use mods to eliminate stability requirements but i have never found that necessary. I can build as high as I like within the game's parameters.
I did mod for a while but I prefer the simplicity of vanilla because I think that the limits we have on us can paradoxically open us up to new ways of thought and make us better problem solvers. that said, we should be able to put any item on an item stand and hang item stands downward facing from the ceiling. also plant decorative vines and bushes. come on IG, get with the program.

Do we have that mod greylisted? Two words:
I mean, I've done so a few times but there's always terrain and whatnot to consider, it can be a bit challenging to just recreate something I built elsewhere.
Plan Build.
It's a mod you'll come to love if you ever build the same structure more than once.

When I'm playing to play my bases are practical. Decor comes later. When i'm gathering resources I bring every thing back home. I dismantle the wood piles and the rock cairns I made and use them to build/expand/decorate while I'm smelting the ore I brought back.I tend to build themes. Roman roundhouses and villas, Viking trellborgs, Motte and Bailey castles, Norman fortresses, etc. and try to recreate historic buildings.
I dig that but I try to balance it with a level of practicality. Shame it doesn't always look the best when practicality becomes a focus :/

Make a just build world to experiment and see the materials you will need. you can also look at previous botm for inspiration, unless you want to be completely original.

Neither inspired nor discouraged. Those people are in a completely different league to the point that thinking about them feels pointless to me.

Never tried modding the game before. What does the mod do, exactly? Two words:
