Never imagined fog as a prime game feature

Always considered fog as an overused developer toy that ruins my view of the graphics and decreases my enjoyment of a game.

Sorry to break it to you, but fog is real and it can be very dense and thick at times. Since this is a survival game set in the cold nordic realm, with a lot of lush forests and foliage, surrounded by mountains and bodies of water, and a warm sun that comes out during the day, fog makes a lot of sense. It wouldn't make a lick of sense to not have some fog.

Sure, it has always been used as a trick to hide poor view distances in games, but it makes total sense here.

in my life I have known only once a fog so violent that I literally saw not beyond 1m50 (around 5 feet for no metric people) in front of me in my garden and in the streets of my villages it was really terrifying

Here in Oregon we get a little bit of heavy fog every fall, winter and early spring. It's not constant heavy fog, but rather a couple of days here and there. Mostly in the mornings and evenings.

Back in October we had a 60 car pile up because of heavy mist.
