Today was a good day in Valheim
Started out bad. Went into a new crypt, and there was a welcoming committee of Draugr and Blobs. No problem. Except they kept on coming. Ah, -body pile. Wonderful. So I went full Berserker, kept my shield on block and smashed my way through them to the body pile. Success! Of course at this point I'm down on health and in the cooldown for my healing mead. Turns out there was another body pile up the other hallway. And this one gifted me with a two-star Draugr archer. Basically put an arrow right through my shield, staggered me, and then when I recovered he laughed off a combo from an upgraded iron mace. And then I died.
Okay, gotta get my stuff back. Got basically one shot at this, or else I'm just going to keep crafting armor and weapons to leave down in that crypt. Got my lvl 4 Bronze armor and an upgraded Bronze mace still. Oh! And I have that stupid Bone Tower Shield! Hated it because I couldn't maneuver while carrying it. But that just might have enough block power to save my butt. So, went back, managed to creep past the Abomination right at the edge of the swamp, and into the crypt I went. So, went at him shield first, and I didn't get staggered! The slow attack with the mace managed to get his attention. Bappity bappity bappity with the mace while he was staggered, and he was done. Victory!
Hauled my stuff back to the portal, and now time to loot the crypt. I get almost to the swamp when who shows up but one of the local Trolls. I've been running into them in that area, but with the light armor and having a ton of levels in Run, I can outdistance them even without Eikthyr power. But wait- what if? Nah, that's never going to work. Will it? Let's just see.
So I baited the Troll. Let him stay dangerously close behind me, to encourage the pursuit. And guess where I led him? Yep. Mister Troll, meet my new friend Mister Abomination. I made a 90 degree turn to starboard and executed the GTFO maneuver. Then I snuck back, hid behind a tree, and watched the show.
The Troll was getting his very large posterior handed to him on a platter. So I took the opportunity to start turning Mister Abomination into a blazing pincushion. The Abomination made disturbingly quick work of the Troll (RIP) and then turned its attention to me. Managed to kite it on a steep slope. Even got on a rock ledge it couldn't climb from below. But it managed to path around it. Kept on kiting it, and after a disturbing number of fire arrows, it perished in flames.
So, a good day. Even remembered tuh feed mah pegs. :-)

My key for early survival in sunken crypts is to bring my bow, fire arrows (not cuz they are great but because they light up what they hit, or don't hit) & bonecrusher. I mine 1st half of muddy pile then stand at far right and make a narrowish channel thru the rest of the pile. From there I can see what's on the other side and plink with bow. If you hear buzzing, then there is always a body pile in there, or two. Now that I am half way through the mud pile I just whack the ground a couple times, watch the numbers until they are zeroes. No buzzing, no piles, no grunting, no blobs. Look through my peephole and there might be something there but not usually. Mine out the rest and pick up loot. Easy squeezy. I also make the fire at entry. If there are big problems at entry, exit, prep and re-enter w your shield up. Never let your food run down or your rest bonus expire. Always have stam & health meads on bar and poison mead up until you are more comfortable. 2 health, one stam foods.
Parrying is vital to figure out and even us oldsters with poor reflexes, bad vision and otherwise nonspiffy gaming skills can do it. It just takes longer to learn, but what we have is time. Do start a new toon and do as noted above. Greylings are a gift. Beware the 2* piggy though until you aren't nekked. And you can miss the parry and survive nicely once you get the hang of it and geared up for that area. I miss golems every so often but with top silver gear and wolf armor it has almost no effect at shield level 30. Muscle memory can happen, even for us. And parrying is actually fun times. Just holding up the shield also works just fine, as you will quickly figure out. The game is actually quite kind. You are given all sorts of visual cues along with the auditory ones so you quickly will see what works, or what doesn't.

I love these stories. I have a hundred of them. I had two trolls chase me into a swamp once and, as with the OP, they awoke an abomination. I think they'd have won but a bunch of draugr chimed in and the blueboys went down.
To the OP. As soon as you enter the crpyt, stay on the ledge and build a fire. If any mobs are lurking free, then they can't get to you there and you can safely mow them down with a bow. Use a 2 handed mace to kill 95% of mobs lurking behind the muddy piles before you even have to face them. You can usually destroy spawners as well with enough whacks (you'll here the explosion). Excavate carefully so you can see any remaining mobs but so that they can't jump out at you. Pew pew or whack whack with stagbreaker. Get an iron 2h mace asap, just for this purpose.
Once you get the knack, sunken crypts are soooo easy.
That's my SOP. Archers can attack you on the platform though. It was the second spawner that pwned me.
Not sure if I want to go two-hand yet. I don't have "gamer reflexes" so the best I can do is block with a shield. Am literally practicing my dodge-rolls though when I have some downtime. Am just looking up a YouTube on how to parry. Maybe with enough practice I can at least nail one occasionally.

Practice with a greydwarf nest in the Black Forest, or skelly spawners in Burial Chambers. They don't hit that hard if you screw up (assuming you're in bronze-tier or better equipment), and they telegraph their attacks a lot. The trick to parrying is determining the precise moment to bring up your shield... which takes practice, because it's a little different for each type of mob.
You can even start a new game with a new character to get the gist of it; parrying greylings is fairly trivial, and if you've got at least two food buffs active you can go toe-to-toe with a greyling empty-handed without even blocking ("panic flailing, activate!"). Any non-tower shield works; for that matter, so do most weapons.
You'll know you got it right when you hear the "kaching!" sound and they bounce backwards. Then just get to the point that that happens most of the time, and you're good to go.
