I want to farm crystal, but it's a bit painful trawling through mountains for them.
Do the golums spawn in the same places they rise from, and if so, how often?

They generaly spawn close to destroyed houses, so you can make a portal close to that location, kill them and go down.
Its like 1 every 3 days.

Yeap them respawn close to silver veins and ruins
