Wood piles get destroyed eventually?

I noticed that the woodpiles of 50 wood I place take damage over time and I need to repair them. Will they go down to 0 and break or will they stop decaying at a certain point?

I like a nice lumberyard in my base. It adds to the atmosphere and gives me at-a-glance info what I'm running low on.

first good response i've seen. was gonna sound off on the same idea.
When you first attempt the Burial Chambers, thats where they are useful.
Coming down off the ramp, immediately toss a pile in the doorway(s) that doesn't have a door.
Clearing passages as well, opening the first door off the ramp, typically a hall with a open doorway to the left or right. Perfect time for woodpile CC lowbie tool.
Proved invaluable against my first 2 star skele archer, who put me down first. My first time in that backwards dropping stoneslab hallway. The archer and his two melee buddies were camped out, and clipped me trying to get away. I had thrown down a wood pile just at the top of it to block pursuers. And absorbed several arrows when I returned for vengeance. Can double as a door back-stop. Mean skele cut you? run, close door, set woodpile. Let them chop through it all. Time enuff for fleeing.
Then again with my first encounter with green skele. He hit it two or three times and destroyed it. Luckily I had a spare with me.
Which brings me to the most basic point, and use. Cheap walls. Wood Piles are as versatile as the mind using them. When used properly they can be the general in the field.

All buildings take water/rain damage down to 50%. Water damage will not take them below 50%. You don't lose any resources through this process.

Are they just cosmetic?

Cover them and they should not decay at all; so make a 'wood shed' of basic pillars and a roof. Wood exposed to the rain degrades over time it is is not under/part of a roof.

Ah yes that's true I forgot to mention you can negate this effect entirely by using roof covers.

Do wood piles actually serve any purpose? You cannot store and take out any wood, right? Do they at least add to the comfort level or something?

I mainly use them in the field, so to speak. They're quick and easy to build and dismantle, can be seen from a distance, and don't require a workbench.

It's good to have them around when you're building. That way you don't have to go to a chest and pick up the wood, it's easier to just hit decosntruct on them and instantly get 50 wood to your inventory. Plus they have that cosmetic quality.

Dismantle? As in use the wood within the pile??
I've made a woodpile and all it seems to have done is nicked wood out my inventory and wont allow me to use it anymore.

Can the wood in the pile be split or is it just an inanimate useless object now?

You break it with the hammer tool in hand. It's a cosmetic storage solution. Rocks and log piles take an entire stack of the resource to place. Dismantling buildings is a full refund. These piles can be exploited to stack inside one another to save space.

Awesome, thank you.

The water/rain damage only applies to anything that is NOT under a roof

its like a storage of 50 wood placed for building or decoration
one can destroy them with the hammer to get the 50 wood back
no, atm they cant be split or used like a chest
when one is up for building those woodpiles can be placed out to get quick acces to the wood (after destroying) and continue building without the need to go to a chest
