The Mistlands Look Awesome

I've just watched the trailer and I can't wait to get there in my current run. I'm in the plains, and I'll be going for Yagluth as soon as I find him. I'll get on the test branch now, lest I blunder into Mistlands.

Of course, the trolls (not the fun, blue kind, but the tedious armchair game designers) are all over it. Everyone who said it would never happen, and everyone who thinks they could do it better, has a vested interest in finding fault, real and imaginary.

Never mind them.

The devs clearly wanted to deliver something that was worth the wait, and they did it behind doors—paying a heavy price—for the sake of the big reveal, I intend to enjoy it thoroughly.

It sounds like OP is basing their entire expansion opinion on the promo video of the zone.

Progression, items, etc are fine with Mistlands, but the physical zone exploration itself is not enjoyable. At least for me. Not enjoyable, at all. And that's one of the primary things in the other biomes that make Valheim so great... exploring. Mistlands is just a slog.

At least now I have a zone that can replace the swamp as my least favorite biome in the game.

And yet, you are still playing.

As for waiting until I have thoroughly played Mistlands, why should I be silent while all the paid troll$ and other ax-grinders try to solidify opinion? Especially when their complaints are bogus-as-hell, prima facie.

Our character is not destined to return to earth. Our journey is the other direction, into the fantastic, into Valhal.

If we win, we are deemed worthy to die gloriously in the epic final battle, not to found a dry-cleaning franchise.

Sheesh.

I mentioned the trolls because of all the troll threads. But you are right. I could have stopped with praise and waited for the trolls to jump in, as they always jump into any thread about pure enjoyment.

I did not praise the new biome at all. I only said that the trailer looks good and I was looking forward to exploring it.

Just offhand, it does not seem to me that the new biome must necessarily suck just because it is different or not "realistic." Those absolutely sound like made-up complaints to me, from a source that was determined to find fault, aka a troll.

Should the game have an arc, or should we do the same thing nine times? I think it should have an arc, and it should bend toward the fantastic.

Still, it's true. If I had stopped with pure enjoyment, some troll would have jumped in and provided an opportunity for the sub-essay on trolls and trolling. I must learn to be patient.

The heavy price is the impatience and crying from everyone. I also agree with this post as i love the mistlands and i think its super duper epic.

Edited to state: I know this heavy price because i myself, was one of those who complained. almost got in trouble for being stupid also LOL >.>

Sorry but how does posting a link to the general news page for Valheim support or refute things?

I have misinterpreted his post. Bacon's complaint is the fantasy game suddenly has magic in it according to his different topic. A lot of complaints stem from "devs did nothing" even though they clearly have been.

It suggests a motive for trolling a rival game. I have a suspicious mind, and it seems to me all too likely that big software houses would hire troll$ to try to hurt the reputation of indie games, especially around awards time.

However, it's also possible just to get hung up trying to prove some ancient negative post about a game. When I strongly dislike a game, I'll post one bad review, if any, and move on, but it seems some people get stuck trying to prove a game is bad, often based on their own subjective reaction.

The only objective proof of the worth of a game is whether people enjoy playing it.* To the extent that someone is trying to forestall others' enjoyment as a weird way of proving their case, they are acting as trolls—they're just not getting paid.

*OK, a game should have a moral compass, and preferably not an evil one.

"Cringe" is cringe. What did I flatter? I only said that the trailer looks good and I'm looking forward to playing.

Apparently, I was right about the trolls coming out. If someone hates Valheim, but won't go play something else because it's important to spoil everyone else's fun, that is the definition of a troll.

Oh, and look. It's awards time, and Valheim is eligible. So we can expect paid troll$ as well as Dunning-Kruger afflicted ax-grinders who think they could do it better if only their mothers would let them.

youre the one affected by something, indicating that anyone critical must be an arm-chair game designer. weird projection by you, since you obviously know better than everyone what is good.

no one who likes the update can go into detail about why they even like it. plenty of people in my thread have gone into detail about how off the design is. it's off, the devs admitted it. only try-hard whiteknights wont, because they are jealous they cant discern that level of detail or possess the necessarily level of critical thinking to see how off it is.

there are a lot of people who will now not want to admit they have buyer's remorse because they waited, hung in there, all for the devs to lay an egg with this update. this update was a litmus test, after so long, and a dissolved roadmap. they didnt pass the test, and live ive been saying again and again, you can claim you like it, but you cant claim its consistent with the previous biomes, which have fairly realistic settings and semi-historical tech progression. the devs admitted this was a change, so people who like the game as it has been may not appreciate the change. the new design is of the rails.

Why not let someone enjoy the game they like.
There are other topics where you can bash on the game.

Well, but I didn't say that anyone who disagrees with me is wrong, did I? Nice straw man.

I guess I don't understand why being realistic is a criteria. The whole game takes place in an afterlife fantasy world, and it's progress is from death to Valhal.

Up till now, biomes have been based on the real earthly biomes Our Hero knew in life. We are deposited, rated-G naked and clueless, in the safest place in the world, filled mostly with familiar things. The greylings are comical, once you get to know them.

But if the game is going to have an arc, it should be toward the fantastic, because that is where we know it is destined to end. Moreover, Our Hero is being tested and trained for worthiness to die in the final, futile battle of Ragnarok, so it should arc toward metaphorical if not literal darkness. We might enjoy some temporary victory at the end of the game, but it can only be temporary.

Valheim is a disk world. It has an edge. I've read that you can even sail off, though I haven't tried it myself. It's on my list.

Realism? Seriously?
