Except you will notice that every minecraft server also has to install anti griefing add-ons because the world is full of asshats.

you must be getting really bad luck or you're not looking for the iron. After 1 my group got 2 people full equipped. The one Crypt was close to 2 other crypts that each equipped 2 people fully.

with any multiplayer server I recommend Valheim plus mod to add a higher drop %, especially for iron and farming stuff.

Nobody runs open servers because the game has authoritative clients & so isn't secure.
Just a single malicious player would be enough to join & delete each server's entire world.

It... works almost exactly like Minecraft.

You can easily mod the server to not require a password, but I don't think I'd recommend that other than for LAN play.

Multiplayer in this game is awesome.

You equate a map with a perceived lack of sunken crypts as a reason to start a thread proclaiming multiplayer is bad on this game?

I scoff at you.

In a recent playthrough with 5 people, we had managed to explore and find Iron by day 15. By day 30 we had enough Iron to fit into 3 Large Chests.

We explored very far from our starting point, so far that from near the middle of the World we had sailed more than halfway to the Bottom before we found our first Swamp with Active Crypts.

It's really all about Spawn Luck

Independent of resource availability, the mining (in all forms) long outstays its welcome.
Needing players to harvest wood/copper/iron/silver from locations that no longer pose a threat quickly turns fun exploration into tedious grind.

Hopefully the devs recognise this shortcoming in their biome design & difficulty curve.

Yes agree resources can be a pain in MP. As suggested above, play a SP world and milk it for resources. You can import raw materials to the MP world in your characters pockets.
Pro tip you can even cheat in your SP world and conjure up the resources via console commands if you are so inclined.

That's just been pretty darn unlucky, or we were really darn lucky. We had six people in fully upgraded iron gear after 15, maybe 20 crypts.

Also since we split into groups and went to explore separate ways to find iron it didn't take more than an evening to collect the iron and haul it home

You could make a second world, just for mining iron if you wanted.

It's more a luck of the world you get. The one I used prior to my current world was full of crypts.

Current one isn't bad either.
