Screenshots

I look around and everything I find says that to take a screenshot in Valheim all you have to do is hit F12. But I can hit F12 all day and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

I'm running a modded game solo, it's possible I suppose, but I don't think any of my mods would have anything to do with it. I'm trying to get a shot of my world map but it doesn't seem to make a difference what I'm trying to screenshot.

Good idea but all the other F-keys do what their supposed to do.

I have no idea how that would be done. There is only one reference to screenshots and that just specifies which key.

I have the exact same problem occasionally. Sometimes F12 works to take a screenshot and sometimes it doesn't. What I have found is that after my game has launched, while I am on the START game screen, when I press Shift+Tab, to open up the Steam overlay nothing happens. On those occasions I will not be able to use F12 to take a screenshot. If I quit the game & restart, 100% of the time I will be able to access the Steam overlay by pressing Shift+Tab, and F12 will also work to take a screenshot while playing. This may be unique to my setup, but I thought I would share this information with you hoping it may help.

As @Complaintdesk mentioned. You need Steam Overlay enabled in order to take screenshots. This could be under Steam Settings or under the specific game properties.

If you still can't do it with Steam then would recommend just using (Windows Key + Print Screen) keys. This will take a screenshot of only your active window and not entire monitors.

Edit: It can occasionally be a key-mapping issue but this has been a problem with Steam for at least 12 months or longer now.

Ok... IF your issue is that you can't get ANY screenshots to work (ie, you're not getting the little camera-clicky noise when you try to use F12), try this:

In your Steam client settings, make sure you have the Steam overlay enabled.

Then close Steam and reopen using Run as Administrator (right-click on Steam, select Run as Admin - you might need to click on the "More" menu item to access it). You need to do this from the Windows Start menu, not from a desktop or tray icon.

This SHOULD then allow you to take screenshots. I occasionally need to do this as for some reason the screenshot function stops working.

(If you're not running Windows I can't really help you.)

If the issue is you don't know where your screenshots are going, head to the Library page for the game you're playing and you'll see any screenshots you've taken on your profile for that game. Then you can manage your shots from there. :)

Bring up the steam overlay and it will say what to press for a screen shot, I think mine is shift + /

I tried with a couple of different games and no screenshots. I looked all over and couldn't find any settings that said anything different than F12 for screenshots. I'm going to have to go through and pick over each mod I have, i guess.

Tried a couple of Steam games. No Screenshots. Searched Steam settings. The only thing I found said F12 is the key to use - but it doesn't work.

See if it works with a different steam game. If it doesn't its likely a key mapping/configuration issue in your steam settings. If it does then its likely a key mapping issue in Valheim or a mod conflict.

Screenshoting is a steam option, not valheim. You need to look into your steam configuration to double check what key it is mapped to.

Clearly you were able to do so a year ago...

Here's a how to reminder ;)
When you hit F12, Steam takes a screenshot.
Go to your Steam Profile/Screenshots and hit the Upload screenshots button. select shots taken from Valheim, from your games list, and upload the ones you wish to use.
Once uploaded, refresh the Screenshots page by hitting the Screenshots button again, your newly uploaded shots will appear there.
Now open one of them by clicking on it and you'll see at the top of the window an URL.
Copy that URL by highlighting it and rt click/copy (or CTRL+c) and then you can paste the URL (CTRL+v) anywhere you wish to post the shot.
Easy eh? ;)
