my theory is that birds are everywhere in meadows/bfo. you just need to cut all the trees to see them. obviously beaches are preferable

Aside from shooting them at night and during storms I also find feathers in the abandoned villages chests also when I chop down some trees must have killed some gulls sleeping there.

You can shoot seagulls by fine weather, but if you miss them, you generaly have no second chance.

Fire arrows are very effective on the Abomination.

I try to conserve the feathers for specialty arrows. Fire arrows for first boss and then for the trolls early on when you don't have a great bow and your bow skill is low. The birds can be killed during the day as well, but you have to be quick with a bow shot, and during the day when it's raining they are easy to kill as they go to ground. I never make flint arrows, not worth wasting the feathers on them, I save them for other specialty arrows down the road.

You can shoot birds with flint or even plain wood arrows. Maybe your shots are landing at their feet? The crude bow has a lot of drop on your shot.

There are usually a good number in the black forest crypts as well. Generally I stockpile those and end up shooting few birds.

I've managed it a couple of times but never on purpose.

Just don’t use arrows that need feathers to hunt birds for feathers.

I throw the spear with the middle mouse button when I see them.
