Valheim and mods, a quick question
CAN these mods break my game, corrupt the save, and so on..
My friend and I are sharing a world in Valheim, and we are pretty opposed on the subject of mods.. I've been wanting to try them out, because many of them seem to improve the game experience.. My friend on the other hand, are worried that they might result in us "losing" our world..

I doubt any mod will dig into the code for saving, world streaming, etc and intentionally break it. You’ll be fine.

The biggest risk is probably adding new elements to the game which then stop existing if the mod doesn't update with future versions.

If things are saved by a string-based UUID then it would probably just vanish when loaded without the mod. Depends on how the game works tho

Yeah, my worry with those is from a user perspective it's hard to tell failing elegantly from invisibly falling through the floor and floating around forever in the void as a modern MissingNo.

Depends on the mod I would say. You should give some examples. Graphic mods are all fine. Valheim plus and that loot mod too. As long as you guys have backups of the world nothing should happen.
The most important thing is that both of you have them. Not only the host of the world.

I've never had irrecuperable world corruption with mods.
If you want to try out some, you could begin with small quality of life things, like instant loot after killing mobs, or loot collected from a larger radius.
I think the big mods, with dozens of users might be safer. For instance Valheim +
You can create a world just for testing.

In my experience updates for Valheim tend to break the more complex mods - my solution is to carefully choose mods for Valheim by reading the respective mod discussion/forum entries on Nexus Mods - i only choose those mods where i think that they have decent support by the mod maker(s) (i know this is absolutely subjective but so far it worked for me). But it is still try and error on each major update for Valheim - for the most part, i had to wait a few days before the more complex mods got updated before i could continue to play. And i also lost a few mods along the way which did not get any further updates after Valheim updates.
I would be careful with mods that enter items/building pieces into the game - if they break after an update you may loose your game (either by being unable to start the game at all or because there are a lot of empty places and holes in your bases which you are either unwilling or unable to fill up with other items/building pieces, or due to simple "frustration".
Pro-Tip: Always make a backup of your world save files (google their directory on your harddrive) and also of the character files (albeit they are not related to the world saves) before modding your game.

Edit: I don't much care if the MODS get broken, so that we have to uninstall them.. As long as we never lose our world

You know, I think that nobody can absolutely garantee your world won't get broken if you use mods. There are too many variables. Like if you install your mods properly, if you install too many of them or conflicting ones.
What I can say is : I've used mods for hundreds of hours of games and never broke a game; But that's me.

I know that guarantees don't exists :) But you can often find out how well the mods work, by asking the community.. For example, I would not rate Fallout too high, as the mods can kill your save files

Won't an installed mod affect all my worlds?

Obviously they *can* but it seems rarer than vanilla Valheim conspiring with Steam to corrupt its own worlds honestly.
I'd recommend the generic Unity games mod manager at https://thunderstore.io/package/ebkr/r2modman and suggest your first mod should be SimpleBackup or BetterServerConfig to make recovering from any losses easy.
