That is pretty much what I was expecting, it's extremely disappointing.

I'm using a old save ( transferring from my old world ) i had to get ready to head there on a new seed

Not only is magic locked behind the new mistlands resources, it is arguably the last thing you unlock. The way the new resources are put together forces you to essentially only get upgrades once you have collected every single type of new item and fully explored a large amount of the new biome.

oh what a shame i was so looking forward to magic Old Norse Magic like a seer or a Warden or a witch, maybe in a expansion ?

Think old school magic, like lord of the rings. You have magic items and potions, and once in a while a spell (boss buffs), but most of the time everything is resolved with swords.

It's been awhile but I recall seeing magic as a skill somewhere in the dev menu. So, they will probably add it later.

The only thing currently is Buffs you can gain from slaying the Bosses. There are some elemental attacks in the game and very few weapons with elements on them for the player.

There are no spells for the player, currently and likely ever. The buffs last like 5mins with 20min cooldowns, something like that.


The Devs are small. At the rate they progress things it is unlikely or YEARS before you see anything other then the new locations/mobs/bosses/next tier gear.

The game is based on Nordic mythology, you died in battle, so Hugin brings your soul to another world (that doesn't exist for real in viking mithology) called Valheim(as 10th world of Yggdrasil made by devs) where you need to prove you are worth of Valhalla to join Odin's army by defeating his slaves (in-game bosses), deal with hard environment and your own weaknesses.

No player Sorcery in Valheim unfortunately.
There are items that are "magic" like the Ward and late game Arrows but as of right now that is pretty much it.

Its the Powers of the Bosses you absorb and make yours when you defeated them.

Does that mean a sorcerer character is legit ? Or you still need to swing your weapon to kill thing, 'power' are just there for add flavor (like the Fuh-Ro-Dah in Skirim) ?

Some bosses give you skills that are essencially buffs, would not count them as magic. They work in supportive role and can be activated for short period of time to gain certain effects, but only one at the time can be selected. There are few items that have "magical properties" that inflict certain status effects, these are mostly additional effects on top of regular damage. Some enemies have magic but player does not have any "offensive magic/spells".

Saying you can use magic in this game is pretty disingenuous. You cannot be a spellcaster, mage, wizard, druid or anything like that.

There is basic alchemy which looks likely to be expanded.

Outside of the special powers from the boss, no, you cannot use magic. Out of the five powers we have at this point: two are defensive (one of which isn't necessary yet), one is stamina related, one is resource grinding, and one is environmental. There are a couple of weapons with magic properties which provide DOT and/or slow effects.

There is magic, and limited ways to use it. You can't ve a wizard.

As of right now, magic in the game is limited to:
1. portals that you can build that let you telepirt anywhere on the map to another linked portal.
2. A handful of unlocked abilities.
3. A handful of magically infused items.
4. Enemies casting spells.
5. Meads, or potions. which aren't really magic at all but if you shut your eyes and stretch really hard you can imagine it is.

This game needs some component and or rune based spell casting.

There are "magic" arrows in the late game once you get to the mountains.
