...I'd like somehow to sync my local copy of player/world to the cloud version, when I try to move my cloud copy over, I get an error about 'already a copy there'.

I assumed that when I log out, lI save a copy in both places, guess not.

If you are running mods I would you recommend you disable them before the updates occur. For instance, if you are running Quick Slots remove all your stuff from the additional slots. This is one likely to break with the update (it did last time) and all your armor and whatever you have in the other extra slots will disappear forever. I imagine the same will happen if you are running a mod that allows extra big chests and larger stacking of items or additional carry weight, etc.

You can take any character to any world. Maps supposedly will generate the new biome if you haven't explored those areas yet. Heard of a mod that can convert old maps but don't know anything about it.

It has a lot of detailed info about the change in the save system. IIRC, using legacy worlds & characters shouldn't be a problem. Maybe a one-time effort in clicking a few buttons, but there shouldn't be anything that can break (as long as you didn't use mods).
