disappointed with the magical direction
valheim exists in a fantasy universe; there's a giant tree branch in the sky and you start the game being carried by a giant bird woman, after all. but at its core, it's an intuitive and fairly realistic survival game. gather resources, build shelter, eat good food and perform better, explore, fight, improve.
magic introduces arbitrary and non-intuitive design. find the mcguffin and put it in the other mcguffin to craft the mcguffin item. the design becomes unbound, no longer grounded in any real allegory. cooking food in a cauldron, being able to craft different things with hard vs regular wood, weaving linen, etc. are all real things that have intuitive benefit to a survivor.
like the devs said in the rock paper scissors video, magic is "just ranged with particle effects." the look of the mistlands is now glaring and cartoony instead of understated and immersive. people already used to complain about the draugr fang glow, which looks like nothing now compared to the garish purples, blues, and oranges from the trailer footage we've seen.
i will give grimmcore credit for telegraphing for a few weeks now that people will either "love or hate" the direction. like everyone else, i will play it, but i feel let down.
i also think it doesnt make sense from a progression perspective to introduce an entirely new mechanic in the 6th and now final biome. magic, just like other aspects, like cooking, mining, archery, melee, building, sailing, etc. needs to be brought along slowly, teased out. now, theres no magic for 5 biomes, and then suddenly the 6th biome is overly geared towards magic. seems forced and artificial. they should have introduced some minor magic elements in the earlier biomes to build up the player first.
"more of the same" isnt a bad thing when the game is so good. wasn't looking for this new direction at all, and it doesnt bode well for ashlands and deep north, which will likely have to follow the magic direction to support the usual power creep in biomes.

The first boss also shoots lighting at you, and now i get to murder it with skeletons. But offensive pewpew magic have been there as long as Fuling shamans.
It's not new to Valheim.
Only difference besides the type of pewpew, is now our chars can channel into that, no longer just being in the recieving end.
Rubbing the strung head of a dead boss to recieve its power and being able to manifest it at will seems rather magical as well, and has been in the game as long as strining up boss trophies have been a thing.

Suit yourselves im stoked. There was already magic in the game. There is magic in the realm of Norse Mythology. This game is based in Norse Mythology. There is literally no disconnect and the argument for "realism" goes out of the way the moment you shout at the world and you get god like stamina powers gained from a Big ass deer who was JUST shooting lighting at you from its horns.

Well another thing is that, there's skeletons and they use swords shields and use bows. Skeletons are actually super freaking magical believe it or not. Unless you've seen a re-animated some how floating around IRL. OH there's also these blob things that shoot out goopy other things. those are pretty dang magical.
I think you might just be reacting to seeing something that is literally a "Direct" confirmation of "Magic" in your mind for the first time and its an epiphany of sorts if i would presume.

The difference that I find objectionable is that we've completely stepped beyond the starting premise. We are now not just 'dead warriors given new life in the 10th world on a mission from a god and granted certain favors after sacrafices' all of a sudden we are warrior/mages.
[edit] Now the emphasis on blunt weapons early on becomes clear - we're supposed to be classic D&D priests not warriors.

Because that's where said mission takes us in the end.

Ah well, GLHF, once Mistland hits normal branch and Steam auto-updates, I'll be uninstalling. Valheim will no longer be the game I thought it was. Can't complain, got my money's worth on the first 5 biomes.

I don't like the fact that they implemented some ♥♥♥♥ magic. They wanted to make a game based on Norse Mythology, not some random D&D. I wonder when did this change...
And i hate the fact that the new 2h hammer looks like weapon from Monster Hunter!
Just take a look at it! It's head is BIGGER THAN OUR TORSO!
Whole Mistlands biome now feels like something out of place, it looks too good, too sharp.
It feels like playing Valheim 2 while im there.
My girlfriend could see me playing for a while today, and she asked me what is this game (she played Valheim for a moment) and i told her that it's just Valheim.
She said that it's impossible because it looks totally different, and asked me if this is some part 2 or something...
Looks like they hired some new people, who brought a little bit too much ♥♥♥♥ ideas to this game (like this HUGE AF HAMMER).

Have you Met the NORSE god THOR yet? He wields a HUGE AF HAMMER as well. This is a stupid complaint. This is a game about a heavenly afterlife for norse warriors to prove their survival prowess against mythical and magical dangers so that they may reach norse heaven proper.
and HUGE AF HAMMER is where you draw the line?

I do think we need better looking weapons/gear though. Perhaps the magic is for that. Like introducing items into the game that contain magical runes. Frostner is really the only "magical" weapon in the game. We need more magical weapons and armor

Not just Frostner, Stagbreaker and the Iron Sledge are both inherently magical weapons, but all these are subtle magic, now we're getting 'in your face' magic.
If the glow of the draugr fang is considered a minor effect compared to Mistland magic... well my time with Valheim will soon come to an end. Although not many (any?) games in the past have held my attention for over 3000 hours of play so *shrug* 'all good things come to an end'?

There are two more biomes.
It is not the final biome.
