Did the Vikings know the anchors?

A moment ago we distracted ourselves and the ship moved away floating, it is very annoying not having anchors.

Yes, they certainly did!

They don't appear to have remembered that knowledge in their afterlife in Valheim though ;)

Just don't forget to furl your sail and you won't have that awkward moment of splashing in the deep sea watching your boat happily sail away.

yes, but their boats were also made to ram up on shore and reversible so you just face the other way to leave.

Theres gotta be a better way to stop the boat other than jumping out.

Ramming it into something.

There are 5 settings. Hit W or S keys to toggle through them. There is also an indicator on the right hand side of the screen when you are actively driving a boat telling you what "gear" the boat is in and what direction the wind is blowing. To stop make sure there are no up or down arrows indicating direction on the indicator:

Backwards
Stop <---leave it on this one and it won't move
Forward 1 (paddling)
Forward 2 (half mast)
Forward 3 (full sail)

I've explored entire islands and the boat doesn't move unless something bumps it.

Note: boats don't stop on a dime so going from full speed to stop will still result in a lot of drifting. You can either slow down before you get to your landing spot and it will drift less. Or, you can ram the front end into the shore which causes damage but accomplishes the same thing.

Maybe anchors will show up in the 3rd update but honestly, it's just a visual as the mechanic is already there.

Momentum is a thing. To stop the boat without jumping out, you have to cancel out the momentum. Cut the sails as you're going towards shore, then stop with the rowing, and when you get on the last stretch, hit reverse until the boat stops, then immediately kill reverse.

When you get practiced enough at it, you can stop the boat EXACTLY where you want it. But if you're not 100% stopped, it will continue moving unless you jump out. And if you haven't jumped out, it *can* drift if something happens.

My first raft will be the ghost ship that all Vikings tell their children about.

"And there ye have it. Make sure to raise yer sail before getting off yer boat or it'll sail off to roam the seas forever just like old Maelstrom's haunted raft..."

why would you need to stop it if you aren't getting out?

This pretty much happens to me whether I want it or not. Once, I slammed so hard into the dock the boat went into the workbench shack and stuck there. I was immensely proud of that fail. I also use it to ram logs that fell into the water.

Huh, I always thought the goal was to see how far inland you can "dock" your boat before destroying it and rebuilding it where you need to.

You'd have loved the boat mounted harpoons in Archeage, could scrape your frigate right to the top of a mountain with enough spare time and determination.
