There are backup files in C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim

There's separate directories for "worlds" and "characters". The backups are the .old files. You should backup the whole Valheim directory before messing with it. Take off the .old and see if that helps. Maybe you know all this, but if you don't, hopefully it will help.

Edit: Hopefully you didn't just make a new character.

Wow! Thanks for the super fast response! I did not know that so thank you. Just tried finding the files but don't see \appdata after my name? I was playing on my gf's server and was logging out, and when i logged in I was all naked and afraid status

Alright... so I'm gonna sound like a noob idiot, but how do I back up the file correctly? I'm a Harley mechanic who is more of a gamer than a biker, and I'm a little sauced right now, so I really don't want to screw this up. I just upgraded my iron armor and I'm not happy I lost it! Any help is appreciated!

So the directory probably doesn't show cuz it's likely hidden.

Then to make a backup you basically just right click the Valheim folder and say copy. Then go to a directory like your documents, and paste it there.

Without much experience with any of this, and being little sauced, I could easily be walking you into a disaster.

Couple questions, sorry if it sounds like I'm insulting your intelligence I really don't mean to:

1. Do you maybe have more than 1 character, or did you possibly accidentally create a new character? Maybe your original guy is still available at the loading screen. (I've done this.)

2. Are you using mods, like Valheim Plus? It's possible to lose inventory if you end up on a map without the + config, or sometimes the config file gets reset. (I've done this too.)

No offense taken. I've only had one character and I don't use mods. I was just resource gathering between seeds and BOOM! Naked and afraid. It was like I died and all my inventory was gone but all i did was log out and log back in and there was no gravestone. All of my skills stayed but all of my hard earned items were gone. It even showed the "no skill drain" like I died, but I was just in my home area with no enemies around. Was super weird and frustrating! I just did console commands to get my stuff back. Feels lame to have to do that but I'm back to having the gear I worked hard for.

That may sounds like something hit a limitation in size of memory, I hope its not the case.
I assume this because your 100+ hours and when a certain action performed which updates your inventory, and then it just disappears...
But thanks god there is a save game backup system. Good luck with recovering it.
Be sure to report this bug to developers as it seems like a critical bug.

did you manage to restore items from savegame when using Valheim Plus?
I was using it to expand storage layout to 6 rows, joined a friend's map without the mod and then all my items on bottom 2 rows disappeared :(
