Personally I feel anyone complaining about this should receive some kind of ban from buying games in EA status on Steam . Save a lot of us the headache of listening to the same complaint over and over
So if I read this right you get annoyed by people complaining about being mislead by the Devs or criticizing poor work on their part and they get a pass because it's in EA status??

Of course, there's always the option to not be annoyed by not reading the comments in the first place ... ;)

Seriously tho', why would you be willing give any Dev team a pass because they're trying to milk more money out of a game by abandoning it and selling out to the most evil game franchise ever? I have ZERO problem with people making money ... but ...

Personally, I think if a game developer publishes a game they have a responsibility to fix it up. Perhaps I'm weird. But then I also think car makers shouldn't release cars with bad airbags. ;P ;)

It took me all of 15 minutes to make a couple backup / restore routines that preserve the player's world and character. I'm not a programmer. Is it wrong to expect a game (especially after it hit it big) to be fixed up properly? Proper backup should be a core feature.

No offense intended but I truely don't get you attitude that they get a pass because it's in EA status.

OK, I can see a quick and dirty backup routine when they're first starting design, but this game isn't "just released" and hiding behind "well it's still in alpha" is nonsense. When you have created something that millions of people have bought you are responsible for taking care of them. Letting people lose their entire progress and/or character is just callous.

The average game player plays for FUN, not to becaome a computer tech and have to program their own backup system. Nor should they have to research to "see if it's in EA status" before bying so they can be aware that it means you won't get support.

At least that's the way I see things.
How in the world did the devs mislead people?
So they release a new patch and you take that the devs are abandoning the game and selling it to an evil franchise?
Where are getting that info or are you just blowing air out your mouthhole?

That's what my backup batch files do / did. The Backheim "Mod" I refered to does a more complete job; he backups the entire directories in a separate folder that are time stamped.

This can be a lifesaver in cases where the person doesn't realize there's a problem, or opens and closes several times trying to figure it out, wiping out the crude 'backup' the game does.

If you don’t do Backups it is your sole fault if s*** goes wrong. Computers are machines designed and built by humans. Very complex machines. ♥♥♥♥ can and will go wrong. If you don’t do backups don’t come to me screaming. You have nobody but yourself to blame.

BTW, you don’t need to be an „engineer“ to do backups…

The game seems to be reforming terrain at times as per a bug in the PTR test forum.

Why did it even happen in the first place?
I spent a lot of time in my personal world building a base and looking for the caves in the mountain biome only to find out that it's all gone. Of course my first thought was to shut down and launch Steam again, so both of my "backup" files in the LocalLow folder are renewed. I'm devastated :(

EA or not, if it stores local files, and you care about them, back it up.
This game gets a star for doing a backup for you, but the problem with automatic stuff is that it automatically does its thing right or wrong. A copy somewhere that it can't touch is immune.

@zep tepi is right, here's a bit more info ...
The CHARACTER files are saved seperately from the WORLD files.
Both are located here on Windows 10:
C:\Users\{YOUR USER NAME}\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim

Characters and worlds are separate folders.
In the WORLD folder there are two files that make up the "world" -
{NAME OF YOUR WORLD GAME}.fwl and {NAME OF YOUR WORLD GAME}.db
Like for mine - Weingrad.fwl and Weingrad.db

For the CHARACTER it's one file - {YOUR CHARACTER NAME}.fch
for example mine is the rock.fch

When the game closes these files are updated, so if you open a game and see ti's broken DON'T EXIT THE GAME! Instead hit the Windows Key or use Ctrl + Tab to switch out of the game (easier with two monitors...) and go to the folder (I have a shortcut on my desktop but I'm weird). You can then compy and paste the files for safety.

Each time it exits it ALSO makes backups of these files (both World and Character). Like:
Weingrad.fwl.old
Weingrad.db.old
the rock.fch.old

If the game is RUNNING the normal files (not the .old ones) are the world BEFORE you opened the game. The .old are the world saved before that, hopefully still good.

To make sure it's clear, the three files are updated and the last session is renamed
blah-blah.blah.old so there's three files and three ".old" which are the last session. That's the Devs backup plan.

BUT..!

If you open, find a problem (OH S**T!), exit, RE-OPEN and exit AGAIN, you're screwed because the files have BOTH been updated; the "normal" and the "old" since you exited twice. {SIGH}

There is one SMALL possibility of safety (assuming like most people you don't run a sytem backup daily). Windows has a "Previous Files Version". IF it's setup on your machine.

If you RIGHT click a folder you MIGHT see an item "Restore previous versions". If you get that, AND your system happened to take a snapshot, you'll see previously dated folders. You can restore one of those from before the problem ( you have to do both charcter and worlds folders) and you'll be restored to that date / time. Might lose a few days but better than a complete loss, eh? IF it works.

Doubt this is timely enough to help but I tried. :-)

One last thing to help in the future - I just posted this in another thread (i'm crossposting to save time) :

I run a "Mod" (not really, it's OUTSIDE the game, just a Windows Batch File) called Backupheim that does a backup of the World, the Character, or everything. Great for cases like this where you can lose everything! I LOVE Valheim, but IMO the "backup" system is a total disaster.

Here's what I use: https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/1325

I actually wrote my own before I found this, but his is more polished ... ;-)

Use tip: You can run it when the game is running but it WON'T have the proper CURRENT data as Valheim only updates the WORLD files on EXIT or when an Autobackup occurs. The CHARACTER is only backed up on EXIT or LOGOUT. (You can use the F5 key console to force a World save, but it DOESN'T get the Character. Crazy. BROKEN. My opinon.)
So run this every time you exit or have accomplished a major task (killed a Boss, etc), certainly once a day. You then have mutiple backups of everything.

Cheers and good luck!

Hi... I found though for now that the mod causing the issues with loading a Beta main screen instead of the official was Jotun mod and they have just updated :

Not sure if this help to your problem but I hope it does

Cheers

@ramifir

You can stop spamming every thread now. Not everyone with problems has that particular mod.

Usually when someone's base goes missing people will tell you to look for a backup file to load. Usually has a .old on the end of it. Delete the current one and take the old off the other one to make the name match the current file. But I've never done it myself so I can't be more clear than that.

Search for missing base or world threads and you'll find better instructions. Good luck!
