Why not finish each area?
What is the point of releasing an area like the mistlands when it is so close to being done, but without finishing it? How hard would it be to just give the boss an item it drops instead of a red cube that is just called a placeholder.... Like it doesn't need to give us the next tier of stuff yet, but how hard is it to just put an actual item.... I can't tell you how much fun I had soloing this game, and then finally beating the queen boss was the biggest letdown I've had, it basically dropped nothing, and was pointless to fight

Yagluth dropped also a placeholder before mistlands update, so i guess with next update the queen placeholder will be turned/replaced into whatever it will be.

As you know that dropped item is heavily related to the next content that isn't made yet. They don't want to finish that item yet as it will commit to some decisions they aren't ready for, and if they did it would restrict some properly informed creative decisions on the next biome.
It would still be disappointing if you got an item that did nothing and was named. Would having it be named really change the way you feel? That's a very minor thing. The only reason that the item exists in the game at all is so you get the reward for beating the boss eventually when the next major content update drops.
Also, don't you get a trophy to mount for a new skill? I don't think that's 'basically nothing'. It's all the other bosses gave, as well as the item linked to the next biome. The plains boss also gave a placeholder item pre mistlands.

The boss often drops something needed for the next biome, stands to reason this will be for the Ashlands. So really they can't 'finish it' because its linked to the next biome.
Now personally If thats the only reward for killing the boss then thats a different issue thats a problem with all the bosses

I mean, it is an early access game so by definition it's uh, kind of not finished yet. To my knowledge though, Mistlands just did exactly the same thing (progression-wise at least) as plains did when that was the newest biome addition. Plains boss had a placeholder item to, pretty sure the plains gear couldnt be fully upgraded either like the mistlands gear now, stuff like that.
Seems those are mostly just easy solutions to making sure the long breaks in between updates don't result in the player advancing farther ahead than intended and becoming too prepared for whatever the next update has to bring (as is a ton of us have chests of flametal somewhere, no idea if itll actually be usable as it is by the time they get to ashlands...maybe we'll need a new crafting station for it or something. Point is, its a biome material for a biome that doesnt exist yet and wont for quite a while and yet still players are stockpiling it with no purpose just in case it might one day...they will totally do so with any other wiggle room the devs give to and potentially ruin the experience of that next biome when it releases as a result...yes totally their own fault, but they'd still likely complain about it to. yay, early access).

How would they know to drop a swamp key if they had not yet designed the swamp around locked crypts? How would they know to design an ore-finder if they had not yet designed the mountains with hidden ore pockets? This is what you are asking. Personally I think they should by now have a concept for the remaining content, eg maybe the ashlands has a fire extinguisher item from the boss or whatever the gimmick will be .. but if they haven't gotten to that point, a placeholder is fine.

Same thing happened when defeating Yagluth pre mistlands patch. As someone said its a place holder for now. Accept it and enjoy what you got or move on.

And if the Ashlands release works like Mistlands, your placeholder drop will acquire its new power in that update. No need to re-fight The Queen.
