My first time playing, the bird dropped me and a greyling instantly killed me. Killed me a few more times whilst I'm trying to work out controls and discovering I've got Stamina. When I finally punched him to death, a bull charged me and killed me some more. I died 8 times before I even spoke to the bird and left the stone circle.
It's so satisfying to now smack the stupid things with my Mace and watch them fly :)

If I remember correctly, even with 0 stats and naked, blocking with fists and kicking the pest should work, should they be only one. Of course, you are not used to these actions when playing for first time.

Well, as GunsForBucks has mentioned, the real enemy are the trees. Most of my early deaths came from trees falling and rolling over me... [sigh]

They trick you too. Lul you into a false sense of security then out of nowhere splat as it got a bunch of its friends to throw them around. 1000x worse at night, you never see them coming. Evil incarnate I tell you... even witches are made of wood!

When cutting a beech tree you can jump and bump the trunk and it will generally go in the direction you push it. However, to get around this the tree will often hit and break another tree which will then take aim and fall on you for revenge. Birch, fir and pine trees don't seem to respond as predictably to the jump/bump technique. They are all obviously plotting to kill Vikings per orders from Odin.
