Sounds like a Grey Dwarf infestation to me. They will occasionally trickle in from the forest to attack planted crops, very common.

If you need a Grey dwarf exterminator I charge 160 gold a day, free meals, including labour for putting up a palisade wall and swatting the invasive intruders.
