There is really not much protection for players, and really nothing to protect bases but the little dwarf ward so all it would take is some creep and much is ruined. Same with folks that use mods can ruin your game by spawning in stuff. It's just a bad idea. The devil you know and all that jazz. It is solo or co-op. Try discord or reddit too.

i was wondering this. the server browser seems to be a bit pointless. is there a big cheating or greifing problem with this game or something that causes everyone to stay locked down all the time?

YES. To an extreme amount.

You basically can't play this game online because even with the protection thing other players can still easily destroy your builds.
