How do you sail close to shore without agroing flyers

I've been sailing everywhere, trying to find a viable swamp to farm iron. So far, every swamp I've found is directly connected with plains or mistlands. I'm not ready to fight serpents and I only move to the ocean in the day and when the weather is nice.

Yesterday I died to a wraith that spotted my karve on the very edge of the swamp, inches away from the actually being in the ocean biome, How the hell does one sail at night time without going in the ocean AND without agroing flyers?

Yeah, staying away from swamps at night is a good idea.

The ocean is actually better, since like Fzanco said the serpents can be outrun if you do encounter one.
You may not even encounter one; I don't know what the spawn chance is, but it definitely isn't 100%.

Plains are nasty though, for sure. In fact, I thought (before opening this) that the thread title was referring to the mosquitoes. :D

PS. What I sometimes do is just float in one spot through a night or a fog, if I think it's too risky to keep sailing. Have yet to get attacked while still.

Spawn chance for serpents is 5% at night. Additionally weather can cause an extra 5%. So you only get serpents during the day in bad weather.

The other thing is it checks for spawn chance every 9 mins. Night only lasts for 9 mins. So staying in one spot is the smart thing to do, if you have to stay out in the ocean, to avoid serpents at night.

Careful on settling in mistalnds or running through most of them since you need an undiscovered one if they updated them, for iron farms I just park my boat facing the sea & head to the iron. Note that building a fire unless it is the big one it will go off & walking through swamps without rested is high risk, you could use potions but better to go with rested, find a spot where you can build a hut with fire for 8/10min rested.

I do sail literally at anytime of the day & find the spawn rate of wraiths to be low (up until now I have like 30 chains total), I'd call it a bad luck more than anything else but you could always use portals if the spawn is far away.

I might have been lucky, but so far serpents have been quite easy to not fight for me.
If you have some wind in your sails, you can just outrun them, and they get maybe 1 hit on your boat.
If you are paddeling and you get away from their spawn location far enough, they will stop following.

I also had one run away the moment i shot an arrow into it.

Boats are quite durable so as long as you repair it before and after you sail, you should be fine.

The real problem is when islands are too close together, and you have to move between 2 nasty biomes.

Still on a raft?

Anyway the simple answer is to not sail at night.

The swamp is particularly bad since the ocean biome practically hugs the coast. So stay away from swamps at night.

The safe way is to go ashore for the night. Mistlands isn't a bad option at this point since it is not populated yet.

Meadows and Black Forest tend to have decent water areas before ocean so finding a spot to sit out the night on the water isn't bad either.

The last thing you want to do is blindly sail into a plains at night.
