You'll need bronze armor in order to do Swamp. Until bronze though, don't bother upgrading anything. It's just a waste of resources.

To a point, although total armor and especially resistances increase the size and amount of hits you can parry without being wrecked by stagger.

What the rest said, I only wear Troll-hide at the moment, meanwhile my other buddies are wearing Iron. Why? Because I use the bow mostly, and with a good shield and mace, you don't need armor if you can time the parry. Armor just keeps you from keeping murderized by Death Mosquitoes and such. Even with Troll-hide level 2, and some good food in me, I can take a couple hits from those things. They're only scary when they 1-hit you from out of the blue.

Actual tip for zero armor runs: Just mead it up. On the off-chance you do get walloped down to almost zero, pop a mead potion and make sure your food is topped off.

If you don't need whatever bonuses, armor vs no armor is the exact same I'd you don't get hit. If you can pull it off, go for it

Your question lacks context.

Are you having play challenges at your current tier of difficulty(ie the biome-boss)?

Armors are divided into what contextually could be called light and heavy per most biomes:

Meadows = light-rags / heavy-leather
Black Forest = l;ight- troll hide . heavy - bonze

And the list goes on.

However there are players who have played the game and beaten bosses with little to no armor due to alternative methods of game play.

So unless you're getting frustrated in your progress with biome challenges, then there is perhaps no problem at this current stage.

There's almost no difference between rags and deer hide. Just keep trucking until a real upgrade presents itself.

When I can't beat the enemy, that is when I know I must upgrade.

If you can always defeat the enemy, you do you mate.

Some Armour sets are not worth making as you can progress and make better ones without them. I would suggest upgrading your gear each time you have a high level of difficultly with a boss or mobs.
