Also, don't exhaust your stamina by sprinting. Alternate running and sprinting pace, so that you can break line of sight when it matters, and you can jump over a small obstacle when you have to..
From time to time, go in sneak mode to know if the pursuer is still aware or only looking for you. You can also look backwards when you are not sprinting.

This person is ignorant. Mobs can absolutely smell you. Try sneaking up on a troll with the wind at your back. Deer 100% will smell you if they are down wind.

Nah, that's just flavor text. They don't decrease your sneak value and certainly don't make you louder.

The rest i'm 100% sure of since i've spent alot more time fighting mobs then trying to sneak up on deer.
The devs didn't model smell in the game. They did model sound. Most creatures can see 20 meters in a 90 degree arc in front of them. Sounds travels 64 tiles and the creatures can hear it in a 360 degree radius.

Whenever I run from a mob that much, I tend to attract other mobs. Then I die.
Run until you find a place they can't reach, then formulate a strategy for getting rid of them permanently. If it's a flying mob, it typically won't take more than two or three arrows, unless it's a wraith.

If it's a wraith.... Go find a place where it will be easy to get your gear back and kiss your arse goodbye if you're not yet at the level where you can handle Swamp mobs.

Don't run in a straight line through open space. Weave around the densest woods you can find. Mobs can't path through obstacles as fast as you can. You can slow them down and eventually break line of sight.

If it's a skeleton, it's even easier because they will aggro on other things and get distracted. Conversely, if you lead other things past a skeleton they will be delayed.

They will follow until you shake them, but doing so is not impossible.

Your treating the mob like its on a leash. Other games have taught you to do that. Don't just run away, break line of sight and start to sneak so your not making noise. A mob can both see and hear you. Some can even smell you if the wind is blowing that direction. First time a deer spooked because i was upwind of it was an eye opener.

Deer will spook if you aren't behind them. They have a cone of sight ahead of them.

well aware of this. this is why when i'm behind them in sneak mode and they spook i assumed it was due to wind direction. Deer in this spook on a boar fart though so it was probably something random. But I think after hundreds of hours in game i've figured out deer spook if they see you thanks lol.

Break line of sight, then sneak away.
Doesn't really work with flying mobs though.
