if one lays that sort of trap one can avoid getting hit
an magically moving ballista (damn i dislike this thing) could be hard to avoid because it could hit one accidently

and dont really like the decision to put this and "staffs for magic"into valheim
it just dont fit into the theme

lmao, this community is something else. You do realize Valheim ain't real life ? It's a game, the devs can make whatever they want. They added a turret in the game, guess what most people would assume would happen when you build it ? To shoot the enemy, not you.

We're lucky to get automated defense at all, the trade off is it isn't some sort of intelligence, just shoot what moves, need to plan accordingly.

It's absurd and incomprehensible, but it's deliberate.

Just place a 'keep out' sign and punish anyone who trespasses on your property.

This sounds like one of the more stupid things in the game. I've yet to reach the level to make them, but I am curious about the method people use for it.

Knowing that it targets players and allies, maybe it would be ok to set them up in like little 3/4 closed wall area made from raising the ground or something? So something like it wouldn't be able to target the interior of your base, but it can shoot outwards at approaching enemies. More like a line of sight thing.

I doubt anything for this is actually ideal, but it might help for people that want to still use them. Otherwise, I'd imagine being set up at a far enough distance to just get the edges of the approaching areas might be ok?

Deliberately stupid.

Theoretically even if it would only target threats the protection is still nearly useless since the bolts travel way too slow and often miss the target when it's moving.

Considering you get it in the black metal phase of the game it is way too late to provide any meaningful protection against enemies you can't already handle and don't bother using it as anti-air artillery against Gjalls it doesn't do enough damage to keep you safe and likely it will miss all the shots anyway.

How can they hit you? Mine are more than terrible at aiming.
