There are two IM styles. One has a long staircase and is usually found along or near the coast. The other looks like a dvergr fortress and can be anywhere in the interior. As others have said, the Mistlands forces us to rely more on hearing than vision and we can usually hear a seeker mob that congregate around a IM. Worst case, use the generator[valheim-map.world] to load your seed and see if the landmass you are currently in has any IM at all. I suspect the developers did listen to some of the feedback since the number of black cores in the IM seem to have increased so even if you locate one you have a good chance of crafting the Mistlands crafting stations. The feedback was that with 1 or 2 cores in an IM, you nearly defeat the entire Mistlands before you can start crafting Mistlands gear. On the other hand, the fragments of the seal breaker seem to have gone down and that seems fair. You still have to explore up to 10 IM to be able to go engage The Queen but at least in the later IM you go with Mistlands gear. This was excellent work from the developers.

There isn't any one trick to finding them. If you see a distant wisplight, you should always go check it out, and if you hear seekers around you, it's a good idea to search the surroundings in case there's dungeon entrance.

Whether sailing will be more helpful or just legging it is down to player preference and map generation. Both methods can help a lot in establishing how large the region is and how many dungeons there might be, they are pretty well spaced out, comparable of frost caves IMO.

Some claim that mines can be found at the foot of very tall and pointy rock formations but I haven't found this to be true.

I can't count how many blue lights I have went to that have SFA except a mage saying how tall I am.

Worthy to note, there are generally two to four seekers hanging out in that area. So wise to beware and prepare.

3 seekers is an immediate marker. It is super rare to find 3 at once without a mine near. Night spawn bugs don't count, but they always spawn near you and usually have babies as well, and also always seem to be alerted upon spawn in. I think those come in pairs, not trios.

sailing the edges usually is a good way to see the stair cases and look for the blue lights the brazier style not the lighthouse style.

climb to the top of rocks and look around. listen out for seekers as usually a few are spawned at entrance

Listen. If you hear 2 or more Seekers making seeker noises during the daytime, there's an infested mines nearby. Otherwise climb on top of one of the spike rock formations, and look for the telltell sign of a Variant 2 Infested mines (Wide 3 pointed rock formation)
