This game stops being fun at Swamp

Why exactly do people defend the difficulty curve in this game? I spent nearly 10 hours getting max level bronze weapons and armor, have 3 of the best food active at once, only for dragur to instantly 2 shot me while I block their attacks on the edge of the swamp? I was rested, buffed, and it was during the day, how is that reasonable? I was already thinking about quitting considering how artificially the playtime gets stretched out by the grindy-ness, but the fact that the game approached difficulty by making is completely unfair is just ridiculous.

What exactly am I missing here? Clearly I was "prepared".

You gotta keep moving against a group. Preserve your stamina. Wait for one of them to become isolated. Get your whacks in where you can. This is how you beat multiple opponents by yourself.

More generally, focus on footwork. Learn to step into and out of enemy melee range just long enough to provoke a strike that will miss, leaving you an opening to attack safely. Only spend stamina to dodge as a last resort. Always leave some stamina in reserve specifically for this.

Here's the thing: gear from the previous biome isn't that good. You can definitely make it work, but until you get stuff from the current biome you have to be careful.

Here's the other thing: stars represent a massive jump in difficulty. IIRC, each star increases health by 100% and damage by 50%, meaning a 2-star has 2x the damage and 3x the health, compared to a 0-star. Don't even try to block 2-star enemies while using all gear from the previous biome. Either keep it at range and whittle it down with a bow or be really careful about dodging attacks like the above posters suggest.

Wait, show up "constantly?" If you aren't exaggerating, then it sounds like you either are spending too much time in the swamp at night or trying to explore a swamp that's pretty far away from the start position.

not mentioned above is a little bit of terra forming abive water and map/path marking (basic circle with a cross... my preferred) your path out... for that hasty leech free retreat :-)

Stamina management, judgment, and even preparation are more important than armor. Food maybe, however I feel that gets muddy really quickly.

I see a problem here. 2-star Draugr don't showthat often. I think it's the same Draugr trolling you.
Sure there is a spawn nearby, avoid that point. Also, avoid swamp at night. With bronze gear, even if you're rested, eating good food and fully upgraded, avoid the fight. And if you see an abomination, just activate Eikthyr and run for your life.
Even for veterans, swamp is the hardest area. The smart option is to stay away from trouble, take what you need and go away. Knife, bow and stealth are the best options. Always carry a portal and never explore at night.

I thought similar. Probably wise to death sprint to gear collections, then go farm, upgrade base, etc, till such 2 star despawns.

Fully upgrded Troll Hide aromor works too. It only has 2 less armor points than Bronze but doesn't slow you down like the Bronze gear does. Its also a lot easier to get the mats to craft and upgrade, plus the bonus to stealth is nice to have too. Makes having fully upgraded bronze tier weapons a lot easier too as you don't need to farm as much Copper.

I usually keep my Troll gear until I get to the Mountains then got full Wolf.

Two star Draugr can pack a big hit. Was it one of those?

Only recently started the Swamp myself and had a similar hit on my first visit there. After that I sailed around the Swamp biome until I spotted a Sunken Crypt reasonably near the shore line and, after sleeping and prepping up, I headed straight for that to get enough iron to craft better gear (iron mace 1st for me). That made progress doable for me, lol.

Keep going. The unlocks triggered by the Swamp are well worth persevering for... imho :)

Don't try to block 2 star Draugrs or even 1 stars for that matter. Use the backup method until you know you can block or even better parry them. When they or just about any critter is about to strike move back (they telegraph something awful) and then after they miss go in and get a hit or two. On 1 and 2 star mobs don't try to take more than 2 swings because you will get hit. I recommend one until you get it down and If a group swarms then hightail it outta there. The fool stays and usually dies.

The two star Draugr (especially archers) are one of the bogeymen of the swamp. There are others, though the others are easier to avoid. I play permadeath runs and have entered the swamps for the first time... dozens of times (2500+ hour retiree so lots of time to play). Every once in awhile I die in the swamps still. Lose track of where the 2* archer is, have a 'hold my beer' moment, just flat out do something stupid in the wrong place and oops dead.

I wouldn't have it any other way, it adds excitement that there are things you need to be afraid of, things you should be running away from (zig zag if archer). Find another path in.

My last two runs ended in the swamps; the earlier one I lost track of a 2* archer when I blundered into a pair of blobs, took care of the blobs, but caught an arrow in the back. The last run ended when I wens somewhere I knew was dangerous and thought I'd be lucky.. RNG said nope!

However most times the swamp, if not a breeze, is definitely doable as long as you don't get too sloppy and stay prepared. Just wait till you get to the Mountains!

Once at the swamp the strategy changes. in this case, you would need to avoid the 2 star draugr or very careful kite them till you kill them or get them out of the swamp.

I recommend taking time to level ground and make paths into the swamp. Make sure to start early AM and get out before night till you are more comfortable. Swamp was a [REDACTED] for me at first, however now it's much easier even with a new character.

And of course I think some of the grind needs adjustment too, luckily it's not done yet and I bet they tweak some of these to make it more smooth.

Yep, this method works for everything in the game.

You can use this on large numbers as well. I dont always want to block, so you have the stamina to hit. But I have taken on groups in the swamp, trying to eliminate those pesky spawns. and its always a skeleton spawn, and a draugr spawn.
there can be multiple starred enemies, but as long as you keep your cool, and back up, circling around, you can beat them. I like the challenge though...and the glory!

In every biome there are one or more mobs that you look at and go "Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't try to tank that with last biome's gear." Two-star Draugr are definitely in that category. These are things you need to either avoid, or make a plan for how to deal with them. You're not on the top of the food chain until you have maxed out the current biome's gear, and even then you can get overwhelmed if you're not careful. Any time you go into a new biome, go slow, sneak if you must, and run away if you need to.
