Is This Darksouls?
I don't know if you can help. I will say straight away I don't play this game so I personally don't know anything about it other than watching my husband play, but I am looking through the forum and don't see too much to help. My husband loves this game, and is a huge fan of survival and crafting style games, but nearly every time he plays this, it ends in a bitter, shouting rage the likes I have never seen. He says the main issue is that every time he dies and has to recover his body, the game mass spawns baddies to camp his corpse. He doesn't have stamina enough to fight, or it is raining or it's cold, which makes everything harder. He says the number of bad guys prevents him from running and fighting when so many guys are around. It can sometimes take him an hour or longer to recover his body with repeated deaths along the way.
The last boss he fought is Bonemass, so that's how far he has progressed.
My question is...is there an algorithm that creates more bad guys every time you die? Some system wherein it makes it harder for you every time you die and gives you bad weather, less stamina, etc.? I've seen it for myself...he is up against 1 or 2 baddies, dies for whatever reason, then when he returns there's upwards of 20 camping out his corpse. He says if the game sees he has ample armor and resources he doesn't run into a ton of bad guys, but the moment he dies it becomes like the Hunger Games and every mob is aware that he is weaker and gunning for him. Is this intentional?
He has never raged so hard at any game so I have to ask is this meant to be a brutal experience the likes of Dark Souls? Because he'd not play a game like that due to difficulty and generally frustratingly un-fun, unforgiving game systems. Tonight he was yelling at the top of his lungs and it may just be the final straw. Again, he loves the game, but hates it at the same time because he wants to play to relax with some challenge which is fun, but says the game ultimately cheats like hell to make it soul crushingly hard if you make a mistake.

If I had to guess, I would assume he's getting absolutely murked by wolves in the mountain region (since you say he just beat bonemass). Those wolves are a serious problem, I honestly believe they need some balancing. Once he progresses a little further, they'll become easier, but they swarm you early and often and blocking their fast attacks takes all your stamina then you die every time. I was SO frustrated when I first started the mountain biome, made me want to stop playing for a while. Keep in mind that I found the rest of this game pretty easy, and I have mastered bloodborne/dark souls. The wolves are too OP for folks fresh out of the swamp biome.

To directly answer one of your concerns : No , I don’t think the game spawns in a bunch of bad guys just because you died/ are naked. It likely seems that way. Also if you/he hasn’t figured it out yet night time is more dangerous , more/harder mobs will spawn after dark.
Corpse recovery in a dangerous area should alaways be done with full food/ rested bonus/ back-up armor/ and during the day.

I've beaten Bonemass on two separate Valheim worlds. Never fought him in the Swamp.
In both cases, his spawning shrine was within a hundred meters of a Meadows. Bonemass isn't shy about following me out of the Swamp into the Meadows. I'm not shy about beating him down without having to engage draughr and leeches.

Dark Souls is quite different. The fact the you need to recover your corpse in Valheim without your usual equipment makes it more punishing to die. You can not just ignore it, because it not just replaceable "souls", it's your hard farmed equipment. You are forced to play carefully and probably have a second or third gear for recovery tasks.
Don't get me wrong Dark Souls is certainly a lot more difficult, bit it doesn't punish death so hard. Not even mentioning the skill loss.
If you keep your previous armor/weapons in a chest, and you certainly would have a set by now, if you are fooling around in the mountains. Then you wont have to craft everything from scratch.

Dark Souls is harder but less punishing. If you die in Dark souls, at most you'll face a few minutes downtime as you run back to the boss again. In Valheim that downtime can extend from a few minutes to hours, depending on if you need to re-craft gear (for example if you died in the mountains hand don't have any frost-resistance left). Valheim is easier, but way more punishing.

While there is tacticts to each boss I have encountered so far, up to an including Bonemass, there haven't really been a dark souls level of punishment to it. I haven't died on any bosses, yet.
I have died to a few trolls though. Got stuck in a bush or another obstacle while walking backwards or started sliding on a slope.
You have the choice to safe guard your corpse walk, should you die either by setting up a portal.nearby or build a small hut to save.
Dark souls doesn't offer anything like this. If you die, all.mobs spawn and refresh HP and you have to start over from last campfire.

Additional "minions" or "bad guys" don't spawn because of the players' death... nearby baddies may be drawn into the battle as the player runs around a wide area trying to avoid Bonemass.
Bonemass is a (seemingly) tougher boss due to the location, which is the swamps... water / wet weather and cold conditions lowers a players' regeneration rates, as a general mechanic in the game, so the swamps are particularly challenging, but the player can compensate for that by equipping poison resist mead and stamina regeneration mead, to use as needed during the battle... (and have some spare ones at home in case of death)
In order to help even the odds, during the Bonemass battle, It helps to do a bit of terrain prep before the battle takes place. It is much easier when the player raises all the land around the summoning altar, to get rid of all puddles of water, (where leeches can attack player), so the entire battle can be done on solid ground... You DON'T want to have any puddles in the battle area.
It is best to go around and clear out all enemies in a wide area to ensure extra mobs aren't drawn into the battle, once it starts,
Bonemass is resistant to almost all forms of damage except it is WEAK against blunt damage (MACE) (as are almost all mobs in the swamps). Mace is the best weapon to use in the swamps especially against Bonemass. (Shooting Bonemass with arrows is probably the WORST way to try to fight it.)
Bonemass will "telegraph" it's attacks, so the player usually has time to back away when they see the 'wind-up' happening, and in-between those times is when the player should run in and attack with the mace.
Have a portal set up nearby so if the player dies, it is simply a matter of eating foods to get health bonuses back up, resting by the fire to get rest bonus back, then use portal to go get his / her gear back.

This is an easy game if you are cautious, do prep work, and learn from your mistakes.
This is a hard game if you dive in recklessly, do no prep work, and refuse to learn from your mistakes.
For example: dying constantly because he keeps running naked back into a fight he just lost? Those are regularly costing him his skill levels and undoing his progress, making everything more difficult. Rushing in naked to a situation that killed you fully armed is clearly a very bad idea.
Instead: have backup gear and go back to your corpse armed and buffed and careful, using ranged to pull and pick off enemies.

I don't think "brutal" is a good descriptor. Valheim doesn't reward brutish behavior. It rewards calm, patience, and preparation.
For Bonemass, you need a supply of Tasty Mead. It's the only reliable means of stamina regeneration in the swamp.

I think most of us have felt some of his pain at least in the beginning!
This is a "brutal survival game" - unlike a lot of other survival games that say they're hard, this one truly takes a lot of patience, planning & preparation to progress with the least amount of this kind of frustration. It does not cheat, there is no mechanic to mob spawn your tombstone... it is just unforgiving if you try and rush around without a solid plan, or backups to your solid plan. Husband would be better off slowing his roll and figuring out a new approach so he doesn't have this experience. Most people only die when they make a mistake - I know in my case every one of my deaths have been entirely my fault one way or another.
This is a recent thread here where a LOT of great strategy and tactics were discussed, it might be useful to take a read through! https://steamcommunity.com/app/892970/discussions/0/3035976838032130518/
Or, if he's really stuck, there are some great guides written by other players right here - https://steamcommunity.com/app/892970/guides/
Hope some of this helps his blood pressure & your peace & quiet
Edit: If the last boss he fought was Bonemass - the swamps tend to be quite tightly packed with mobs, some pretty fast moving ones too, and generally smaller areas than the others (at least in the maps I've played on!). So I can see why he would feel mobs were all over his tombstone lol

Dark Souls ? This game is a baby to Dark Souls, hell its too easy to call 'brutal' in any sense.
Its too forgiving, has hardly any real bite and ...lets be honest, you can all too easily run from any fight.
Dark Souls is unrepetantaly hard, it does not care if you die, heck DS 2 has a kill counter (stupid as that is)... you need to hit the wall repeatedly, die repeatedly until you win.
This game is more like have good food, best gear, top pots and you win for 90% of the time... no this game is way too easy to call Dark Souls.
I have barely got past the first area in any DS game, and I got all 3 ... meanwhile in Valheim I have got a hall, a nice dock and .... you get the idea, the thrust of the game is not to be DS hard and more build a nice hall and if you have time kill the boss.

Few tips
Tell him to get a rested bonus. This allows a faster stamina recovery and faster xp gain.
Mark your grave on the map. If you die again it will remove the marker from the previous death.
If you die.... do not just go running back. Get your best foods. Get a good nights sleep and go back in the morning during good weather. Being camped by a bunch really sounds like he is running back to his corpse at night and getting stomped by the tougher spawns at night.
Good luck.
