What do Greydwarves want and where do they come from?
Greylings and Greydwarves. Everywhere. They come during the Night. They come during the Day.
Mostly they're in the forests. Sometimes they just walk out of the water or appear out of thin air behind you. Sometimes just 1, sometimes a group of 3 or 5. They run at you, then when you swing your axe they run away immediately. Then they run towards you again. Sometimes they run a half-circle around you. Other times they throw small stones at your house during the night. When you kill one and keep working, another one suddenly appears. They're always somwehere.
What is their goal? What do they want? They run towards me but they don't wanna fight. They throw stones but they don't want you to shoot back.
I understand boars and skeleton warriors. But I don't understand the AI behind greys, or their purpose. I hate them so much.
That's all.

OP, you could read some runestone. Greys were vile humanoids or humans in their former life, who are reborn in Valheim as a punishment, or simply because they can't find salvation (akin to ghosts or golems then). Their vile soul impregnate and animate the earth, moss and wood, and we get these vegetal abominations.
Perhaps their existence is an eternal sufferring, and perhaps they don't even have memories of their former life, on top of being subjugated by the Elder. This could explain why undeads chase them (in case they belonged to the same people before death).
When the soul of a murderer or a great sinner rots under the ground. so yeah murderers rapists thieves I kill everyone I see.

You people acting like they are a small nuances but let me tell you, run into a pack of them when you first start and those rocks freaking hurt...so far they are the only thing thats killed me, (i would not recommend trying to fight them with only a club, and no food with only 25 health...)

They are reborn from the rot of the forest; certainly we can view that as some level of some sort of purgatory... They who are rotten are doomed to rot until they can exist no more...
At least the draugr still inhabit their own bodies. The lands of Valheim are made ancient, but some are more ancient than others? And the Elder of the forest is reclaiming his land with the overgrowth?

There goal is to harass you all night in the black forest so after an all nighter of tree cutting, you cut down a whopping 3 trees. I seriously have had nights like this in early game. The basic ones are trivial, but at night the brutes and shamans (occasional 2 stars) require you to dispose of them instead of chopping trees. Then the swarms of 5-6 happen, then another brute. Before long its day break and you can actually fell some trees.
Now one could lay a carpet of benches 1st, like a good do not disturb sign. But I feel like there big purpose is to actaully level weapon skills, even unarmed for the helpless ones.

The greydwarves remind me of the apes in Princess Mononoke. This is their description:
Apes are peaceably creatures, but the humans destroy their living space by cutting down woods of the Cedar Forest. As they don't really have much intelligence, they start to believe that in order to become smarter and more powerful, they must eat humans.
https://ghibli.fandom.com/wiki/Apes
It did mention something about Odin is looking for warriors to rid the domain of mighty evils. Perhaps they are such minions of the evil things? Or maybe they just want to eat you. Perhaps both?

Yeah they give off the vibe of forest guardians who suck at fighting... maybe their AI is like this on purpose, might be important for the lore later :)

Each biome has its local God. They are the children and followers of The Elder.
But they have wood for brains so they are afraid of fire and run like drunken sailors.
Our task is to kill the evil God of each biome and slay all the followers for their existence is what give their God substance.
After being cut off from the rest of the world tree they grew in numbers.
Basically this is what happens when you don't weed the garden.

The Greydwarfs are just misunderstood. They want hugs guys...thus the outstretched hands as they run towards you. Proof...some even give you flowers.
But my axe does not listen.

Greylings and grey dwarves are "magical" beings made of wood which is why they are weak vs axes and terribly afraid of fire (torches work great, as weapons against them)
They come out especially often when trees are being cut down (cousins perhaps?) and at night.
They are somewhat nothing more than a slight nuisance, but also serve to help train up your combat skills, so while many people become irritated by them, I see them as an opportunity to gain some combat skills and free resources.

Basically whenever you harm the forest in any way, they come at you to try and protect it. If you're cutting down trees at night, be prepared to get swarmed. I think it's a cool concept.

And all along I thought they were here for the batting practice with my mace. Nothing says 'helpful' like a dwarf's head being swatted into a tree trunk then ricocheting for another 5 yards. Now THAT'S entertainment.
